Job summary

The Junior Clinical Fellow in Clinical Research is a key member of the Research and Development team at The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust. The 12 month post involves taking a lead role in recruitment and delivery of clinical research throughout the trust.

You will work alongside a multidisciplinary team of Research Nurses and Clinical Trials Assistants. You will also work under the supervision of multiple Principal Investigators (usually consultant level) and the Director of Research and Development, Prof Anil Hormis.

There is an expectation that the successful applicant will have prior NHS experience and have the ability to work across multiple medical and surgical specialities, both adult and paediatric. However, a large proportion of current research focusses on Anaesthesia, Critical Care Medicine, Respiratory Medicine and Oncology. This post is well suited to those post-foundation or core training, wishing to gain research experience prior to applying to speciality training.

The role provides opportunities to gain experience in clinical research, including the opportunity to complete the NIHR Associate PI Scheme. Previous fellows have achieved publications across various specialities and had the opportunity to attend and present at medical conferences.

Main duties of the job

The Junior Clinical Fellow in Clinical Research will work within the Research and Development team at Rotherham Hospital. They will take lead roles in recruitment and delivery of studies across adult, paediatric, medical and surgical specialties. There is also an expectation to provide clinical support to other studies and provide educational opportunities to the wider research team

Main duties of the role

Identifying and screening eligible patients

Assessing capacity and receiving informed consent from participating patients

Providing clinical support for trials and research studies

Reviewing and completing medical assessments

Working collaboratively with research nurses and clinical trials assistant in providing specialist research and clinical care to research participants

Prescribing of investigational medicinal products

Data collection, management and administration

To develop and maintain effective contacts with relevant stakeholders - local principal investigators, clinical teams, Sponsors, Regional Research Delivery Network

To work at all times according to research study protocols, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), Standard Operational Procedures (SOPs) and Trust Policy

To undertake any other duties, which may be required from time to time, as are consistent with the responsibilities of the grade and needs of the service

To facilitate participant involvement we aim to meet patients where meets their needs, this includes travelling across sites

The Department

The R&D Department is responsible for the research management, governance, support and leadership of all aspects of research across the Trust and performs a variety of roles and functions to drive and deliver clinical research in the clinical pathway and foster a high value research-active culture.

The department is led by the Director of Research and the Lead Research Nurse/R&D Manager, with a team of Research Nurses, Clinical Trials Assistant, Research Governance, Pharmacy and Laboratory colleagues.

Our R&D team work with many external partners such as The University of Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University and other commercial companies and grant awarding bodies.

The Post

The post holder will support the set up and delivery of the NIHR portfolio of research across the Trust, including being responsible for the day to day running of clinical trials and other research studies in the Trust, meeting with clinical teams, recruiting participants and completing study procedures and administration according to REC/HRA approved study protocols.

There are also opportunities to further develop leadership and management skills via the NIHR Associate PI training scheme, and attend conferences and investigator meetings. The post holder will also be encouraged and supported to undertake their own project during this time.
