Job summary

An opportunity has arisen to join the Palliative Medicine Team in Rotherham who provide Palliative Medicine support across all settings, Hospice, Hospital and Community. The role will be primarily based at Rotherham hospice on the hospice ward, but flexibility to work in the community and with colleagues at Rotherham Hospital is a necessity.

Excellent communication skills are required for supporting our service users and for working with a variety of Healthcare Professionals.

Time keeping and managing a case load is important and having experience of prioritising jobs is crucial.

Delegation will be important to know when other members of the team can support a patient such as the Clinical Nurse Specialists

The applicant needs to be approachable and able to work well as part of a team but also to work autonomously at times.

Having experience of working on a hospice ward may be beneficial to appreciate some of the challenges it brings but is not essential.

The successful candidate will be part of the non-resident medical on call rota along with working weekends on the Hospice inpatient unit. Consultant support is available.

Main duties of the job

You will be expected to participate and facilitate the morning handover and support nursing colleagues with advice when required. You will lead the ward rounds on the days when there is no consultant ward round.

You will be a part of the weekly Ward MDT and will chair the meeting in the absence of a consultant.

You will use System one and be proactive in updating other healthcare professionals involved in a patients care.

You will support the clinical nurse specialists in Palliative Medicine and joint assessments may be undertaken.

You will provide some support and education to the medical students and GP Trainees who rotate into the team.

The role will be flexible at times to cover for absence or leave, ensuring that cover is maintained on the inpatient unit.

You will support with providing advice to healthcare professionals and patients who use our adviceline.

These posts are not approved by the Postgraduate Dean or the Royal College of Physicians for training, but the Trust recognises that individuals in these posts will need support and will provide access to teaching and learning resources within the Trust, for example clinical skills training, departmental teaching, multi-professional team training, e-learning and consultant feedback.
