Chaplaincy - Sunday Volunteer
Hospital Chaplaincy is responsible for the spiritual and religious care of patients, their relatives and staff. This is a huge task for a very small team and so the contribution of our pastoral volunteers is greatly valued and of immense benefit.
All people have spiritual needs, ways that enable the human spirit to cope with life. Illness and hospitalization, either personal or that of a relative, can call these ways into question. The experience can raise big questions like Why is this happening to me? What does all this mean? and matters of life and death.
About us
Chaplains are there to support others as they work through this. Sometimes this happens within a religious framework, sometimes not. The Chaplaincy team is there for everyone, of all faiths or none.
Members of the Chaplaincy team are not there to push their own view point onto others. They meet people and support them where they are, if they wish.
This service is available to all, regardless of belief, race, age or lifestyle.
An important part of the spiritual and religious care of patients is the Communion service held in the Hospital Chapel each Sunday morning at 11 a.m.
Many patients find this very valuable, but they need assistance to be able to attend the service.
- Assist in setting up the chapel in preparation for the service
- Patients wishing to attend service and cleared as able by Ward staff have already been identified.
- The Chaplains will allocate named patients to volunteers and provide the details of their location.
- Volunteers will visit the identified wards and make themselves known to ward staff who must confirm that the patient is still cleared as able to attend service.
- Volunteers can assist with the service, but it is optional to stay. They can help with the music or with readings.
- At the end of the service, volunteers will return the patients back to their wards.
