Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 3 Healthcare Support Worker to join the team on the Childrens Ward and Childrens Assessment Unit (CAU) within The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust. We care for babies, children, and young people up to 16-18 years old. It is a busy ward caring for a wide range of specialities including medical and surgical patients, as well as children and young people with mental health conditions. We also have a Paediatric High Dependency Unit with the ward. We have a large, friendly, and well-established team that provide high quality care to our patients. We work closely with the Paediatric Urgent and Emergency Care Centre, the Paediatric Acute Rapid Response Outreach Team and the Childrens Outpatient Clinic.

We are seeking caring and enthusiastic applicants who will work closely with the nursing team to ensure a smooth journey for the children in our care. You must be an excellent communicator as liaising with children, families and the multidisciplinary team is essential. You will have a good understanding of IT systems, and be committed to delivering professional and friendly care.

We have 2 part-time posts available. The post-holder must be flexible as you will be expected to work both Day and Night shifts, across the whole week. This can be discussed more at interview.

Main duties of the job

Working under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse/Midwife, knowing what is expected of you, not working outside of your role, following reasonable requests and instructions within your work which may include chaperone of patients, transfer of goods and equipment between departments. Following locally agreed competency based tasks supported by training and education to gain theoretical underpinning knowledge to undertake:

  • Basic clinical observations i.e. heart rate
  • Blood glucose recordings
  • Urinalysis testing
  • Ketone recordings
  • Blood gas analysis
  • Guthrie completion
  • Respiratory virus point of care testing
  • Lying and standing blood pressure monitoring
  • Fluid balance recording
  • 25-point skin check
  • Application of a dressing under the direction of, and specified by a registered nurse (exceptions are dressings to category 3 or 4 pressure ulcers, compression dressing, negative pressure vac dressings)
  • Removal of sutures
  • Venepuncture/capillary bloods
  • Cannulation
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring
  • Nasogastric/enteral feeding
  • Height and weight measurements and plotting on growth charts
  • Safeguarding checks on system and CPIS

The above generic list of competency-based clinical tasks will be tailored to what you specifically need to carry out the Clinical Support Worker role on your particular ward/department and this will be recorded within your individual competencies file.
