Job summary

15 hours per week

Medical Secretary to Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons.

To Maintain and provide a high quality secretarial service within the Orthopaedic department and to provide a fully comprehensive secretarial role to consultants and supporting medical staff, including Audio typing, diary management etc

Main duties of the job

  • To ensure strict confidentiality at all times. Comply with requirements of Data Protection Act, Access to Health Records Act and legislation issued in relation to confidential data.
  • To prioritise and manage own busy workload in order to provide a comprehensive and efficient personal secretarial service to the Consultants and supporting staff.
  • To work as part of the Orthopaedic Team in ensuring the efficient running of the department.
  • To ensure close and effective communication with colleagues, patients, and their relatives and outside agencies.
  • To undertake the typing of letters within agreed time scales for the Consultants and supporting medical staff, including correspondence involving detailed letters and reports which require a high level of accuracy and an understanding of medical terminology.
  • To utilise the electronic patient record system and ensure digital dictation letters are stored, retrieved. To search for patient information including procedures.
  • To maintain and effective filing system.
  • To provide cover where necessary for departmental colleagues in times of annual leave/sickness and to undertake associated duties.
  • To receive phone calls and take appropriate action ensuring effective communication is used and timescales met.
  • To maintain Consultant electronic diary where applicable.

  • GCSE English (or equivalent), Grade C or above
  • RSA III typing or equivalent or working towards

  • ECDL, Clair or equivalent

Experience

  • Experience working as a medical secretary including medical audio transcription
  • Current experience of Microsoft word processing and spreadsheet packages
  • Experience of Meditech
