As part of a busy and progressive Clinical Diagnostic Centre (CDC), the Respiratory and Sleep Physiology department is looking for a committed individual to join an expanding, friendly and high-performing team, as a Band 6 Specialised Respiratory and Sleep Healthcare Science Practitioner on a fixed term contract to 28/2/2025. The department is very progressive and continues to be involved in a range of in initiatives at regional and national level. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who would like further their career in healthcare science. The service is delivered mainly at the CDC, Breathing Space, Badsley Moor Lane, and at The Rotherham Hospital. You will be involved in the delivery of advanced diagnostic and therapy procedures in the management of respiratory disease and sleep disorders in a range of patients from a variety of backgrounds. Personal development is actively encouraged and CPD activities are supported.

Main duties of the job

On appointment, depending on your skills and experience, when you have successfully completed your initial period of orientation and training, you will practice as an independent Specialised Practitioner in both respiratory physiology and sleep. The role is heavily IT based so a good knowledge of Microsoft Office is required, and you will be taught how to use the specialist software systems in the department. You will also be expected to complete a number of Mandatory and Statutory Training (MaST) courses such as safeguarding, information governance and health and safety. As a Specialised Practitioner you will have management responsibilities and participate in the training of junior staff. You will also develop an area of special responsibility which may be clinical or non-clinical. Our sleep, NIV and Oxygen services are physiologist-led and as such, you will have the opportunity to develop your skills further. You will also be responsible for day to day running and decision-making when senior members of the team are not available.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including Maths, English and Science
  • Cardio-Vascular, Respiratory and Sleep Science Degree (or equivalent)
  • Experience of working in a Healthcare Science Environment

Desirable

  • Appropriate professional qualification eg ARTP Diploma
  • Evidence of further clinical training and qualifications
  • RCCP/AHCS registration or working towards

Experience

Essential

  • Performs spirometry (including tests performed by junior staff), analyses data and reports results. Including identification of anomalies and deals with spurious results. Acts to deal with malfunctioning equipment.
  • Performs lung function tests and sleep diagnostics and presents results for reporting including technically poor performance. Deals with anomalous results.
  • Works as part of a team and independently as required
  • Deals with emerging and challenging situations as they develop. Works under pressure to produces timely, accurate written/electronic records and documents
  • Provides learning and development to other professionals in relation to for example clinical measurements, report writing, patient management.

  • Inputs into MS Excel, when required for audit purposes
  • Works with external stakeholders and service users to improve the service
