Job summary

We are pleased to offer the opportunity for a talented Benign Upper GI Consultant Surgeon with well-rounded training to join an existing team of experienced Consultants.

This is a replacement post within our unit for an enthusiastic and highly skilled Surgeon. This post is the third post within the upper GI team which provides a wide range of upper GI services in the context of and supported by a busy general surgical team.

The General Surgery Department in Rotherham is a busy District General Hospital Unit providing a range of surgical services with a heavy emphasis on both elective and emergency Laparoscopic Surgery. On call is on a rolling 1 in 9 rota. Same Day Emergency Care is provided by a separate daytime rota of senior surgeons seven days per week and this post will contribute to the SSDEC service one day per 9 weeks in common with the rest of the department.

This post requires the individual to be on the GMCs Specialist Register, or within 6 months of award of CCT. Applications may be considered from candidates who meet all other aspects of the Person Specification for the post. Those applicants who meet the full Person Specification will take precedence but any successful candidate appointed on this basis would be on a locum contract for an initial period of up to 12 months.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will provide general surgical and specialist upper GI services in Rotherham in conjunction with colleagues. You will be expected to be skilled in laparoscopic upper GI surgery and upper GI endoscopy, as well being able to manage an unselected acute surgical take including acute lower GI emergencies. Subspecialty interests such as skilled interventional endoscopy, inflammatory bowel disease or enteral nutrition can be accommodated.

The transition to Consultant practice is recognised to be a professionally challenging and rewarding time and the department is happy to provide a period of mentoring and support for a new Consultant colleague. There is an increasing emphasis on dual consultant operating for complex cases. There is a flexible and forward-thinking day surgery team and the department has a successful enhanced recovery programme. Along with your Consultant colleagues regular lists will be provided in our endoscopy unit.

The post-holder will be expected to contribute to the training of the Specialty Registrars who rotate through the Yorkshire and Humberside Training Rotation. A number of non-consultant doctors with bespoke training requirements supports our team and a successful applicant would also contribute to this training.

Prospective candidates are encouraged to visit the department for an informal tour and discussion. For more information about the post or to arrange a visit, please see contact details within the attached Job Pack.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The Department

The department consists of 10 Consultants and areably supported by:

1 x Associate specialist,5 x Speciality doctors,3 x Higher specialty, trainees,5 x Senior Clinical Fellows,1 x CT trainee,5 x Junior Clinical Fellows and7 x Foundation Year Ones (of which one is Trust appointed)

A number of established and capable ACPs complete the medical team.

There are two upper GI specialist nurses and the department has strong working links with consultant colleagues in gastroenterology.

We serve our patients with straight to test services, a busy endoscopy unit, strong peri-operative care and where required critical care including high dependency provision.

Inpatient provision is within dedicated surgical wards. Our Acute Surgical Unit is situated adjacent to Surgical SDEC and we have good pathways for patients with acute surgical problems. We have an elective ward with an impressively short length of stay and a dedicated acute ward shared with our urology service.

The links with other trusts in the locality benefit the department with a hub and spoke model for MDT working with Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and Weston Park the tertiary centre and a shared gastroenterology department with Barnsley Hospital

The Post

This is a full-time substantive Consultant post, offered in an established general surgery department to augment and expand benign Upper Gastro-intestinal service.

In addition to providing emergency general surgical service, the appointee will join a team of Surgeons for providing acute Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy Service, anti-reflux surgery, diagnostic and palliative Upper GI cancer services, including stents and PC gastrostomy. A person with experience in Upper GI endoscopy, anti-reflux surgery and laparoscopic bile duct exploration would be an ideal candidate and best fit for the team.

Support will be provided to perform and further skills in such procedures if adequately trained. We anticipate broadening the portfolio of benign upper GI work, including complex hiatal hernia repair, gastric volvulus, and CBD exploration. The appointee will be expected to manage complicated pancreatitis.

The post-holder will work within and provide leadership for a supportive multi-disciplinary team to provide acute and planned care for our patients.

Clinical work would typically involve theatre lists, outpatient clinics, endoscopy sessions and MDT meetings with oversight of triaging processes and supervision of junior colleagues.

The general surgical team is arranged as two large teams for inpatient care with plenty of opportunity for team working and peer support.

The on call is a 1:9 pattern, non-resident with remote supervision of a senior and junior resident non-consultant tier. The on call work is commensurate with a typical district general hospital with a varied emergency and acute take and inpatient weekend ward rounds.
