Job responsibilities

The Orthoptic Department consists of three part-time Orthoptists, equivalent to 3.9 full-time senior grades. They provide Orthoptic services for the hospital patients and children referred from the Community Clinics. They are also responsible for providing visual field testing. The Orthoptic rooms are well equipped and decorated. There is a playroom for the children adjacent to the outpatients

Fundal Photography and Fluorescein Angiography

There is a separate room equipped with digital photography equipment. The Medical Photographer provides this service. Four photographic sessions have been allocated for this service.

Field Rooms

This room is equipped with two Humphrey Field Analyser and Goldman Field Analyser, a computer with database recording system and word-processing.

Laser Room

Argon and Yag lasers have been installed in this purpose built room. The lasers are maintained and serviced by Physicists from Medical Physics.

Auto-refractor: have been installed in ward B6

A and B Scan: Based in the 4 minor theatre at OPD

The Out-Patient Department is recently refurbished, the out-patient department is well equipped with diagnostic equipment as well as with facilities for fluorescein angiography, argon laser, YAG laser, A and B scan and minor theatre with microscope. Apart from an integrated Orthoptic department. There are:

3.98 WTE Orthoptists who provide Visual Field plotting and L.V.A. Services.

The Post

The post is based at Rotherham Community Health Centre which is part of The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust and the primary responsibilities of the post holder are:

1. The post holder will work under the supervision of the Consultants in outpatients and operating theatres at Rotherham General Hospital. Elective and Non Elective in-patient services are provided at Rotherham General Hospitals Ward B6 Ophthalmic Unit. When on-call for emergencies out of normal working hours been resident on site at The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust is not mandatory but must be on site within 15 minutes.

2. The post holder is encouraged to carry out Clinical Audit and potentially research activities as an inherent part of normal clinical duties. There are opportunities to provide teaching and training roles within Yorkshire and Humber Deanery for Postgraduates. There are also opportunities to develop BMS staff towards Advanced Practitioner roles.

3. It will be a requirement of the post to maintain CPD activity (supported by funded study leave) to achieve Royal College compliance with the CPD programme.

4. The on call commitment will be 1:5

The new appointee will take on the responsibility and development of specialities/multidisciplinary team meetings relevant to their interests, and subject to the needs of the Department in negotiation with the Head of Department. The Department is keen to support any key interests that a Specialty Doctor may have and encourages personal and departmental development to support the service.

7. To cover other consultant colleagues for periods of annual or study leave. This will be reciprocated when the appointee takes such leave.

8. There are opportunities for the successful applicant to participate in other areas if the service has an input to its development.

9. To participate in the effective running of the department, contributing to an equitable share of workload and facilities. To engage in the efficient use of staff and resources for the development of the service in support of changing needs of patients and clinical users within the trust and the network and in the context of the Trust Quality Improvement programme.

10. To maintain a close working relationship with the other Specialty Doctor and Consultant Ophthalmologists and the technical and scientific staff within the Department.

General

1. In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to provide a service in Ophthalmology with responsibility for in-patients and out-patients.

2. In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to play a full part in the out-of-hours On-Call service for the department. This includes being on-call for telephone advice and major incidents.

3. To provide cover for Consultant and Senior colleagues in respect of periods of leave.

4. In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to take part in medical audit and research as appropriate.

5. In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to ensure that the requirements of clinical governance are met.

6. To ensure that there are adequate arrangements for hospital staff involved in the care of your patients to be able to contact you when necessary.

Junior Medical Staff

7. In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to play a full part in the professional supervision and management of junior medical staff.

8. In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to take responsibility for and devote time to teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required for junior medical staff.

Management & Service Development

9. In conjunction with the Divisional Senior Team, to take an active role in the management of the Division.

10. In conjunction with the Director of Clinical Services, Consultant & Senior colleagues, to play a full part in developing & implementing new ways of working in line with modernisation principles that are fit for the future.

11. In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to take responsibility for the best use of departmental staffing and other resources to ensure the maximum efficiency of the department.

12. To observe the Trusts agreed policies and procedures, in particular in relation to managing staff, and to follow the Trusts Standing Orders and Standing Financial Instructions. These policies and procedures have been drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters.

Clinical Governance

13. In conjunction with Consultant colleagues, to ensure that the requirements of clinical governance are met.

Any Other Duties

14. Any other duties as deemed appropriate.

Experience

Essential

• Minimum 4 years full-time service with at least 2 years in Ophthalmology

Desirable

• Experience of working at middle grade

Research and Audit

Essential

• Evidence of audit and the implementation of change following audit

• Relevant research published in peer review journal

Education and Teaching

Essential

• To provide an appropriate contribution to the undergraduate teaching programme. The precise details of the contributions to teaching will be discussed with the appointee after taking up post
