Job summary

We are pleased to offer the opportunity for an enthusiastic with well-rounded Specialty Doctor to join an existing team within Acute Medicine.

You will join a fantastic multidisciplinary team, led by Dr Jahangir and colleagues. The department has expanded steadily and has become extremely effective in providing acute and rehabilitative care to frail, older medical admissions.

Main duties of the job

You will work within an inpatient bed base that covers 3 wards and has an additional rehabilitation ward. You will be supported by 3 frailty nurse specialists, 2 Parkinsons nurse specialists, 2 Registrars, 1 associate specialist, 2 GPVTS and 9 Trainees.

There is a strong commitment to high quality education and you will be encouraged to support in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. As a clinical and educational supervisor you will shape future generations of physicians. The team are committed to, in addition to Grand Round presenting, dedicated Wednesday Geriatrics teaching sessions.

The post holders will also be expected to participate in the emergency out of hours General Medicine on call Rota.

The Department

The Department for Acute Medicine at Rotherham Hospital comprises:

39 Bedded Medical Admissions Unit

27 Bedded Short Stay Unit

Ambulatory Care Medical Unit (12 chairs)

Frailty assessment and liaison team

The post-holder will have responsibility for Acute Medical patients and their relevant area of specialist interest. The Acute Medical Unit (AMU) at Rotherham Hospital is currently staffed by three consultant physicians and we are currently looking to recruit more consultant physicians, as well as increase our SAS capacity. There is considerable opportunity to assist in the development of new ways of working in response to the pressures on Emergency Departments and AMUs. There is the potential to further develop Ambulatory Care, Speciality in Reach and Rapid Access Follow-Up Clinics. The appointee will work closely with Consultant colleagues to provide a comprehensive service in Acute Medicine. The Acute Medical Unit is situated in a purpose built ward area within close proximity to the Urgent and Emergency Care Centre (UECC) and sits within the Division of Integrated Medicine.

The Post

We welcome applications for the post of Specialty Doctor within the Acute Medicine service. The successful candidate will have the opportunity and are encouraged to identify an area of specialty interest in one of the following areas:

Cardiology

Respiratory

Diabetes & Endocrinology

Gastroenterology

Health Care for the Elderly (including Stroke).

Requests for sub specialty interests will be considered on an individual basis. As individuals are appointed to these roles, the areas of specialty interest will be discussed with the successful candidate/s accordingly. These posts are new posts, which we hope will support inpatient and outpatient care along with those individuals already in post.

For those interested in CESR there is a structured programme with an established CESR lead within the Trust. If the successful candidate(s) desires, there will be support towards completion of the Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR).

The aim of these posts is to have integral links between departments to enable close, collaborative working.

1. In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to provide a service in Acute Medicine with responsibility for in-patients and out-patients.

2. In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to play a full part in the out-of-hours On-Call service for the department. This includes being on-call for telephone advice and major incidents.

3. To provide cover for Consultant and Senior colleagues in respect of periods of leave.

4. In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to take part in medical audit and research as appropriate.

5. In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to ensure that the requirements of clinical governance are met.

6. To ensure that there are adequate arrangements for hospital staff involved in the care of your patients to be able to contact you when necessary.

Junior Medical Staff

7. In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to play a full part in the professional supervision and management of junior medical staff.

8. In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to take responsibility for and devote time to teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required for junior medical staff.

Management & Service Development

9. In conjunction with the Divisional Senior Team, to take an active role in the management of the Division.

10. In conjunction with the Director of Clinical Services, Consultant & Senior colleagues, to play a full part in developing & implementing new ways of working in line with modernisation principles that are fit for the future.

11. In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to take responsibility for the best use of departmental staffing and other resources to ensure the maximum efficiency of the department.

12. To observe the Trusts agreed policies and procedures, in particular in relation to managing staff, and to follow the Trusts Standing Orders and Standing Financial Instructions. These policies and procedures have been drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters.
