Job summary
Applications are invited for a substantive
Consultant in Obstetrics & Gynaecology to the Rotherham NHS Foundation
Trust, with a special interest in benign gynaecology and another in
fetomaternal medicine.
Training in advance open, laparoscopic,
hysteroscopy gynaecology surgical procedures would be desirable for the
gynaecology role.
Training in fetomaternal medicine and ultrasound
scanning would be desirable for the obstetric role.
These posts are envisaged to support the obstetrics
and gynaecology service due to the increase in demand in both these areas. In
addition, routine acute inpatient and outpatient Obstetrics & Gynaecology
service will be expected to be delivered by the successful candidate on a
timetabled basis.
The post holder will have full continuing clinical
responsibility for the care of patients under his/her charge and the provision
of obstetrics & gynaecology treatment, which is relevant to their medical
condition whilst in the hospital. This may require the provision, advice and
assistance to Consultants in other specialities and the proper delegation to
and training of junior medical staff.

The
Department
The Gynaecological Service
The gynaecological inpatient unit is located on Ward B11. At
present, there are 6 beds. Each year we perform:
1900 day case procedures
600 elective inpatient
procedures
7500 new outpatients.
11000 FU patients
A full range of gynaecology procedures are provided
including endometriosis/complex and advanced laparoscopic surgery, , laparoscopic
hysterectomy, advanced ambulatory procedures, colposcopy and urogynaecology; advancing
towards day case urogynaecology surgery. We are a cancer unit offering early
stage cancer surgery, with the advanced surgery being performed at our local cancer
centres in Sheffield. There is a very active ambulatory care unit performing
Novasure, Botox and other outpatient hysteroscopic
procedures.
There is specific Consultant-led practice in cervical
pathology, oncology, vulva, fertility, ambulatory care and urogynaecology.
There are full facilities available for the support of minimal access
gynaecological surgery. There are also other specialist clinics including
perineal trauma clinic, pregnancy advisory and abortion care, joint endocrine
clinic, recurrent miscarriage, deep implant removal, sterilisation and
psychosexual clinics.
Early pregnancy assessment is supported by a nurse lead team
with consultant supervision.
The Obstetric Service
The Obstetric unit conducts approximately 2600 2700 deliveries
per year.
The Maternity Unit currently has 23 beds and a Level 2
neonatal unit. Consultant presence on the Delivery Suite is 62.5 hours a week. There
are resident evening sessions with either resident or non-resident on call
overnight.
Antenatal practice is divided up into specific speciality
clinics to which expectant mothers are allocated. The vast majority of routine
and detailed scans are performed within the department. Specific antenatal
clinics are supported by Consultant physicians and Nurse/midwife Specialists
from different fields e.g. genitourinary medicine, physiotherapists, RDASH and
perinatal mental health specialists. The unit has specialist antenatal clinics,
which include preterm, multiple pregnancy, diabetes, gestational diabetes, mental
health, endocrine, haematology, obstetric anaesthetic and ultrasound scanning.
The Neonatal Service
The neonatal unit is designated as a Local Neonatal Unit
(level 2) working in conjunction with the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in
Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. There are 14 cots including 3 intensive/high
dependency cots. The department works in close conjunction with the obstetric
unit and the neonatal network to ensure effective care of extreme prematurity
and complex antenatal problems.
Emergency On Call
There is a mixture of resident and non-resident emergency
on call in obstetrics and gynaecology. This post has an on-call commitment.
