Main duties of the job
We welcome applicants to the Consultant posts in acute medicine with a specialty interest in any medical speciality.
The aim of these posts is to have integral links between departments to enable close, collaborative working.
The post-holder will have responsibility for Acute Medical patients and their relevant area of specialist interest.
The AMU at Rotherham Hospital is currently staffed by three consultants physicians with two current vacancies totalling to five posts. The advertised posts are for whole time or maximum part time Consultant Physician in Acute Medicine.
There is considerable opportunity to assist in the development of new ways of working in response to the pressures on Emergency Departments and AMUs. There is the potential to further develop Ambulatory care, speciality in reach and rapid access follow-up clinics.
The appointee will work closely with the Divisional Director and consultant colleagues to provide a comprehensive service in Acute Medicine. The AMU is situated in a purpose built ward area in close proximity to the Urgent and Emergency Care Centre (UECC) and sits within the Division of Integrated Medicine.
Any consultant who is unable to work full time will be considered to work part time. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on an individual basis in consultation with the Divisional Director.
The post holder is responsible to the Divisional Director.

The proposed sessional commitments are detailed in the Job Schedule section. The main duties and responsibilities of a Consultant in AMU are set out below:
To provide a high quality service (together with consultant colleagues) in Acute Medicine to the people of Rotherham
To contribute to the multi-disciplinary team working
To liaise with Social Services Departments, General Practitioners and Voluntary organisations as required
To advise clinical colleagues on matters within his/her sphere of expertise
To offer advice to medical, nursing, managerial and other staff on appropriate matters
To carry out medical teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required
To participate in the formal appraisal of junior medical staff in accordance with guidelines from the Royal College of Physicians and the Regional Postgraduate Dean
To contribute to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity including Continuing Professional Development
To contribute if appropriate to the training of nurses, paramedical, scientific and technical staff
To participate in medical audit on a regular basis and to help develop it
To provide information as required from time to time for legitimate management purposes, for example to support job planning, service development
To contribute to the management process within the Trust through participation in planning, project or liaison groups as appropriate. In particular the post holder would be fully involved in specialty and divisional level business meetings
To support the Divisional Director with appropriate advice with regard to the development of services at RFT
To work within the framework of policies and procedures relevant to Medical and Dental staff
To participate fully in mandatory training as required and modified by the Trust from time to time and also in annual appraisal, job planning and revalidation procedures
The duties are subject to review from time to time in light of the changing requirements of the service. The duties will be reflected in the job plan, which will be subject to review once a year in conjunction with the Divisional Director
The AMU consultants have excellent teaching facilities, including their own dedicated ultrasound machine to support teaching and acute diagnostics, seminar room, secretarial support, office space, internet / intranet access and PACS system to carry out their work.
Management Responsibilities
The appointee will be expected to contribute to the management process within the Trust through participation in planning and/or liaison and in the provision of information to support the delivery of high quality services and as required for legitimate management purposes.
The appointee must liaise with colleagues and with the Head of Department to ensure that cover is provided within the specialty during periods of leave or absence by their colleagues, having regard to their own sessional commitments.
