Job summary

Applications are invited from suitably experienced and enthusiastic consultant ophthalmologist colleague to join our ambitious and caring team. We would welcome a colleague to work within the team on a full time basis alongside our six consultant and four specialty doctor colleagues. We also have 2 trainees.

We currently provide a range of services including general and acute ophthalmology, glaucoma and medical retina work across two sites. We have modern, dedicated ophthalmology service within Rotherham town centre and also undertake day case, in-patient and emergency work at the main hospital site where theatres are based.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will provide a Consultant Ophthalmology service for in-patients, day cases and out-patients, with continuing responsibility for the patients under their care. On call ‘out of hours’ provides cover the to main TRFT site, supervising and providing advice to the trainee or locally employed doctor on call.

The indicative job plan includes some general work but we can also accommodate an area of sub-speciality interest tailored to the interest and expertise of the successful candidate.

In addition, the successful applicant will participate in teaching duties as required and to take an active part in the education programme of junior medical staff, nurses and AHP’s. The department has a strong ethos of education and support and this is reflected in a departmental teaching programme and departmental meetings.

There are significant development opportunities within this role, in management and leadership, education and quality improvement. We have close links with other ophthalmology services in the local area.

Job responsibilities

The Department

The department consists of 7 consultants and 5 Speciality Doctors. There are 2 trainees rotating through training posts. There are four specialist nurses practising in advanced roles such as cataract clinics, post-operative cataracts and glaucoma clinics. We have AHP’s working in Orthoptist roles. The department is also supported by an eye clinic liaison officer and medical photography team.

The department sees 44,000 patients in an outpatient capacity each year and we have clinics in medical retina, diabetic eye disease and prevention, glaucoma, general, emergencies, cataract, LASER and corneal sub-specialty areas.

The majority of our outpatient clinics take place at the modern Rotherham Community Health Centre in Rotherham town centre.

Surgical work predominantly takes place in the theatre suite at the main Rotherham Hospital site. More than 90 percent of our surgery is carried out under local anaesthetic as day surgery cases and the department is well supported by the day surgery unit. Cataract, glaucoma surgery, laser surgery, squint surgery, corneal grafts, oculoplastic surgery and other ocular operations are undertaken. The success rates of cataract surgery undertaken at the Trust are higher than the national rates and the complication rates of surgery are a lot less than the national ones. We are a modern department with state-of-the-art surgical equipment.

The department is supported by Service Manager, Mr Mike Flint and Orthoptics Service Manager, Ms Caroline Pollard.

Departmental educational, governance and clinical business meetings occur monthly. The weekly educational programme is inclusive and robust and supports strong team working. Nominated educational supervisors support trainees within the department, with the oversight of the College Tutor.

  • MB ChB or equivalent primary medical qualification.
  • Full registration and a licence to practise with the GMC.
  • CCT or CESR in ophthalmology and on the specialist register or within six months of an expected CCT or CESR completion from date of interview.

  • Higher medical degree.

  • Broad range of clinical experience commensurate with working in a consultant role.
