Job summary

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Consultant to provide clinical leadership in Paediatric dentistry and a specialist referral service for paediatric patients who meet our service criteria.

The post holder will work alongside Specialists in Paediatric Dentistry based in Barnsley and Rotherham in developing the paediatric provision within the whole service.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the provision of specialist care to paediatric patients. This will include providing comprehensive dental care under IHS sedation and general anaesthesia. The post holder will provide leadership for the Doncaster paediatric dental comprehensive care general anaesthetic list carried out at Doncaster Royal Infirmary. Dental care may be provided in community, hospital or domiciliary settings as a flexible approach will be required in responding to the clinical care needs of these patients.

The Post

Participation in the planning, development, delivery and monitoring of a comprehensive and holistic paediatric dental service in partnership with the Clinical Director and other Specialists in Paediatric Dentistry based in Barnsley and Rotherham.

Delivery of paediatric dental care for residents of Doncaster and the surrounding areas.

SCOPE AND RANGE

The post holder will be responsible for the provision of specialist care to paediatric patients. This will include providing comprehensive dental care under IHS sedation and general anaesthesia. The post holder will provide leadership for the Doncaster paediatric dental comprehensive care general anaesthetic list carried out at Doncaster Royal Infirmary. Dental care may be provided in community, hospital or domiciliary settings as a flexible approach will be required in responding to the clinical care needs of these patients.

The post holder will take a clinical leadership role in developing paediatric dentistry within the CDS team, including training and support to other members of the team. The post holder will be based at The Flying Scotsman Centre, Doncaster. The post holder may from time to time be expected to cover at clinics at Rotherham or Barnsley.

MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Patient/Client Care

• To provide high quality specialist oral health care to paediatric patients requiring comprehensive dental care in dental clinics, hospital and domiciliary settings. This will include the treatment of those with learning difficulties, challenging behaviour, complex medical histories, mobility problems, sensory disabilities, and other special needs

• To receive referrals for advice on difficult dental conditions or management problems from other dental care practitioners both within and outside of the Community Dental Service.

• To receive referrals from consultant paediatricians for children with medical conditions for whom dental infection or treatment carries significant morbidity.

• To provide out-patient care directly for children requiring the experience and skills commensurate with consultant level training.

• To evaluate and treat children requiring comprehensive dental care under general anaesthetic.

• To provide preventative care and advice to individual patients and their carers.

• Keep comprehensive records and statistical records and complete statistical returns

• To support other clinicians within CDS in providing paediatric dentistry, including accepting referrals, assisting in treatment planning and where necessary provision of dental care

• Provision of advice and emergency care to all groups of patients seen within the Community dental service.

• Provision of a specialist referral service for general dental practitioners and other professionals

KEY INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS

Information Management

• To provide support, advice and clinical leadership for all practitioners involved with the dental care of children in the Community Dental Service and to monitor quality of the service

• To be a clinical supervisor for DFT DCT’s, paediatric dentistry StR and post-CCST trainee as required.

• To identify training needs for practitioners involved in dental care of children within the Community Dental Service

• To conduct the appraisals of specialists in paediatric dentistry within the service

• To provide clinical advice and leadership on matters of paediatric dentistry to the Clinical Director, Consultant in Dental Public Health and the Commissioners of dentistry.

• To liaise with and provide specialist support for allied health professionals including dentists, dental auxiliaries, doctors, nurses, health visitors, teachers, support workers and social workers involved in the dental care of children.

• To promote of the development and use of professionals complementary to dentistry.

• Liaison with hospital and general dental service colleagues and other health and social services staff in order to co-ordinate the patient services provided by the CDS with those of other dental and general health services

• Represent the CDS at meetings within and outside the Trust related to the care of paediatric clients

• To be aware of and apply Trust policies and procedures within the scope of delegated responsibility

• Display behaviours that demonstrate the Trust Vision and Values

• Carry out such duties as may reasonably be required across the Trust

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

• The provision of in-service training to the dental team

• To lead TRFT CDS paediatric dental group

• To maintain professional knowledge and awareness of current dental issues, especially regarding paediatric dentistry. Continuing postgraduate education will be encouraged and supported, especially in the post holder’s area of special interest, consistent with service needs

• Contribute to the development of the knowledge and evidence base for delivering effective clinical care in paediatric dentistry

• To be involved in assurances of achievement with local and national standards and quality indicators including those within the performance framework of the Care Quality Commission

POLICY AND SERVICE DEVELOPMENT

• To take a clinical leadership role in developing paediatric dentistry services within Rotherham including providing strategic advice to the Clinical Director of CDS

• Participation in dental audit, clinical governance, Trust and service training events organised for all staff and the Trust’s mandatory training programme.

• The post holder will also be expected to assist the Clinical Director and undertake such duties as may be delegated from time to time

• These duties may require attendance at any of the Trust’s dental clinics and other establishments for the purposes of service provision, in training, staff meetings and maintenance of services during periods of staff absence

• Participation in continuing professional development as required by regulation and personal requirements as highlighted during the development of personal development plan

• Participate, through the individual development review / appraisal process, in matching organisational aims with personal objectives

• To adapt flexibly to changes which occur in the service and assist in implementing such changes, as agreed with the commissioners

  • Full registration with GDC.
  • To be eligible to be on the Dental Performers List
  • Admitted to GDC Specialist List in Paediatric Dentistry
  • Successful completion of SAC approved 2 year Fixed Term Training Appointment in Paediatric Dentistry (eligible if completion within 6 months of the date of the interview) or equivalent training which follows on from a pre-CCST training period of 3 years or equivalent
