Job summary

We are looking for Specialist in Special Care dentistry to work within a community dental service in South Yorkshire. You will be working with a dedicated and friendly team providing high quality dentistry to a wide range of special care patients. You will be fully supported by a range of clinical and managerial staff across Rotherham Foundation Trust.

You will have access to treatment session under General Anaesthesia, Intravenous Sedation and Relative Analgesia. You will be able to develop your clinical skills and expertise whilst shaping the delivery of special care dentistry for the Trust. Main duties of the job

• To provide high quality specialist dental care and prevention to special care adults in dental clinics, hospital and domiciliary settings. Include the treatment of those with learning difficulties, mental health problems and challenging behaviour, complex medical histories, mobility problems, sensory disabilities, frail older people and socially excluded groups.

• To develop the service delivery model of special care dentistry for the CDS, innovation, policy and procedure development and clinical governance activities.

• Provision of a specialist referral service for general dental practitioners and other professionals.

• Clinical teaching and supervision of Dental Foundation Trainees and STR’s in special care dentistry.

• To support other clinicians in the CDS in providing special care dentistry, including accepting referrals, assisting in treatment planning and provision of dental care.

• Provision of emergency care to all groups of patients seen within the Community dental service.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The Post

The post holder will work alongside Consultant and Specialist in Special Care Dentistry based in Rotherham and Doncaster in developing the adult special care provision within the whole service.

SCOPE AND RANGE

The post holder will be responsible for the provision of Specialist care to Adult Special Care patients. This will include providing comprehensive dental care under IHS sedation, general anaesthesia and potentially IV sedation (where appropriate). The post holder will provide leadership for the Barnsley GA Comprehensive care and be involved in the IV sedation (currently anaesthetist led) lists carried out in Rotherham. 

Dental care may be provided in community, hospital or domiciliary settings as a flexible approach will be required in responding to the clinical care needs of these patients. 

The post holder will take a clinical leadership role in developing special care dentistry within the Barnsley CDS team, including training and support to other members of the team. The post holder will be based at New Street Health and Wellbeing Centre, Barnsley with 2 sessions at Rotherham Community Health Centre and allocated service development time. The post holder may from time to time be expected to cover at clinics at Rotherham or Doncaster if the need arises.

MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Patient/Client Care

• To provide high quality specialist oral health care to adults requiring comprehensive dental care in dental clinics, hospital and domiciliary settings. This will include the treatment of those with learning difficulties, mental health problems and challenging behaviour, complex medical histories, mobility problems, sensory disabilities, frail older people and other special needs.

• To provide preventative care and advice to individual patients and their carers. Occasionally this may also include the provision of oral health services to groups of such patients or their carers or care home staff.

• Keep comprehensive records and statistical records and complete statistical returns.

• To support other clinicians within Barnsley CDS in providing special care dentistry, including accepting referrals, assisting in treatment planning and where necessary provision of dental care.

• Provision of advice and emergency care to all groups of patients seen within the Community dental service.

• Provision of a specialist referral service for general dental practitioners and other professionals.

• Clinical teaching and supervision of Dental Foundation Trainees and STR’s in special care dentistry as required.

KEY INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS

Information Management

• Direction and supervision of Dental Care Professionals.

• The management of the day-to-day operation of the dental clinic at which the post holder is based and the supervision of the CDS staff who are working under the direction of the Specialist in Special Care Dentistry.

• Liaison with hospital and general dental service colleagues and other health and social services staff in order to co-ordinate the patient services provided by the CDS with those of other dental and general health services.

• Represent the CDS at meetings within and outside the Trust related to the care of special needs clients.

• To be aware of and apply Trust policies and procedures within the scope of delegated responsibility.

• Display behaviours that demonstrate the Trust Vision and Values.

• Carry out such duties as may reasonably be required across the Trust.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

• The provision of in-service training to the dental team

• To be involved in the TRFT CDS special care group

• To maintain professional knowledge and awareness of current dental issues, especially regarding special care dentistry. Continuing postgraduate education will be encouraged and supported, especially in the post holder’s area of special interest, consistent with service needs

• Contribute to the development of the knowledge and evidence base for delivering effective clinical care in special care dentistry

• To be involved in assurances of achievement with local and national standards and quality indicators including those within the performance framework of the Care Quality Commission.

POLICY AND SERVICE DEVELOPMENT

• To take a clinical leadership role in developing specialist care dentistry services within Barnsley including providing strategic advice to the Clinical Director of CDS

• Participation in dental audit, clinical governance and Trust and service training events organised for all staff the Trust’s mandatory training programme.

• The post holder will also be expected to assist the Clinical Director and undertake such duties as may be delegated from time to time

• These duties may require attendance at any of the Trust’s dental clinics and other establishments for the purposes of service provision, in training, staff meetings and maintenance of services during periods of staff absence

• Participation in continuing professional development as required by regulation and personal requirements as highlighted during the development of personal development plan
