Job description

Job responsibilities

Main Duties & Responsibilities

This post is for a full-time Consultant Cardiologist with general cardiology skills. Various sub-speciality interests will be considered but not interventional cardiology.

The post will be based at Rotherham General Hospital. You will join a well-established cardiology unit with the opportunity to develop and deliver state of the art services in a tailor made cardiology suite including purpose built catheterisation laboratory. We have a recently installed state of the art Philips Azurion C12 cardiac catheterisation laboratory dedicated for cardiology. The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust has been commissioned as the second centre for complex cardiac device implantation and follow-up in South Yorkshire as part of a regional model of care in contractual agreement with Sheffield Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust since 2018.

The precise job plan of this post will be tailored to the skills of the applicant alongside the needs of the Department but will be expected to include contribution to the diagnostic angiography+/-bradycardia pacing lists, and two half days of subspecialty work per week.

You will be joining a team of 4 other consultant cardiologists, including one with sub-specialty interest in cardiac device therapy, one imaging specialist, one with interest in heart failure, and one general cardiologist. We also have visiting consultants undertaking complex device implantation at Rotherham from the regional network. The resident cardiology doctor team also includes a speciality doctor, two Higher Level trainees from the South Yorkshire and Humber training programme, a part-time hospital practitioner, and 3-4 junior doctors, plus a consultant radiologist with specialist interest in cardiac imaging. A large dedicated team of cardiology nurses, nurse specialists, and highly skilled cardiac physiologists supports the department.

Locally available imaging includes myocardial perfusion scintigraphy, CT coronary angiography, and echocardiography/TOE/Dobutamine stress echo service. Our echocardiography department provides full range of service with four machines, including two Philips ie33 and one new Philips Epiq 5 with 3D TTE and TOE. The successful applicant with appropriate credentials can contribute to the development of a local Cardiac MRI service and candidates with this specialist interest are encouraged to apply.

The Cardiology Suite at Rotherham Hospital, adjacent to the 8 bedded Coronary Care Unit, comprises a dedicated cardiac day case ward, state of the art catheterisation/pacing laboratory, echocardiography rooms, rapid access chest pain clinics, exercise treadmill testing, tilt-table testing, and full ambulatory ECG monitoring fitting and analysis, as well as consultant offices and secretarial support. Nearby to the main cardiology suite is a brand new Cardiac Devices Suite from which a physiologist-led loop recorder service is run, and permanent pacemaker, cardiac resynchronisation therapy and internal cardioverter defibrillator patients are pre-assessed and followed–up with full optimisation service.

The Department has close links with other cardiovascular departments in Sheffield and holds a fortnightly MDT meeting with cardiac surgery and interventional cardiology, and weekly cardiac rhythm management MDT with the tertiary centre.

There is no commitment to General Medical on-call. There is an objective to develop local cardiology cover for urgent procedures out of hours such as pericardiocentesis / temporary pacing, and to provide weekend specialist review of cardiology inpatients, with this post integral to that plan.

For interested candidates there is the opportunity to develop research interest and time for this can be factored into your job plan. We have a successful portfolio of research studies within the cardiology unit supported by a research nurse from the Trust R&D Department.

Any Consultant who is unable to work full-time may be eligible for the post; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Chief Executive, Medical Director and Divisional Director.

The successful candidate is expected to be aware of the Trust’s policies and procedures including standing orders and standing financial instructions. In particular, where the management of the Trust’s employees is involved he/she will be expected to observe employment and personnel policies and procedures.

Duties of the Post

The primary clinical responsibilities of the post-holder are:

1. To provide Consultant Cardiology duties for inpatient and outpatient services and for the proper functioning of the department.

2. Work as part of consultant of the week rota for cardiology inpatient review and management

3. To provide a senior clinical role in the continuing development of the Cardiology and General Medical Service in Rotherham.

4. To carry out teaching duties as required and, in particular, to take an active part in the education programme of trainee medical staff and medical undergraduate students from the Sheffield University.

5. To provide on a reciprocal basis, a Consultant service for Rotherham General Hospital in the absence of his/her Consultant colleagues.

6. Domiciliary consultations as and when necessary.

7. The post holder will have full continuing clinical responsibility for patients under his or/her care, and for the provision of treatment relevant to their general medical/cardiac condition whilst in hospital. This may require the provision of advice and assistance to Consultants in other specialties, and the proper delegation to and training of junior medical staff.

8. The post holder will be expected and encouraged to carry out research and clinical audit activities, as an inherent part of normal clinical duties. There will also be a key role with regard to training medical staff in junior grades and the development of support staff.

9. Opportunity will be given to finalise the job plan and the allocation of sessions following appointment.
