Job summary
This is a substantive post to primarily support the increasing volume of simple and complex cardiac implantable device (CIED) procedures within the Trust. NUH catheter laboratories are currently being expanded from three to four labs which will deliver additional CIED activity to reduce patient waiting times form their current high level. An additional contribution to the Inherited Cardiac Conditions (ICC) and/or Heart Failure services is desirable. NUH has a well-established and growing Devices service, to which the appointed individual will contribute actively. In the year 2024-2025, we performed a total of 931 devices procedures (605 pacemaker procedures, 149 ICD procedures, and 177 CRT procedures). There are currently 3 Heart failure and Devices consultants (Drs J Chuen, A Mistry and S Khan), and 5 EP consultants contributing to the Devices service. In addition to serving our local patients, we are regional centre for percutaneous device extractions, non-transvenous ICD procedures (subcutaneous ICD and EV-ICD) and leadless pacing. We are also actively enrolling patients into randomised controlled trials of conduction system pacing. We have a Senior Devices fellowship programme for advanced training in CIED.
Main duties of the job
We intend to future-proof the ICC service for the next twenty years with a high quality ICC appointment to act as service lead for ICC. By virtue of the piecemeal manner in which the service has grown, the existing Cardiologists working in ICC have tended to do so as an add-on to their central clinical role. By appointing an individual with joint expertise in CIED implantation and ICC we are seeking to rebalance the focus of the ICC service with an individual who will take on the leadership of the ICC service and provide it with resilience and succession planning for the up and coming retirement of two of our established ICC Consultants.
The post will also contribute to the acute cardiology service providing additional support for the increased number of patients admitted with acute general cardiac conditions and deliver cardiology (general and specialist) outpatient clinics. The successful applicant will join a team of 23 full time consultant cardiologists and will contribute to a comprehensive consultant-led secondary and tertiary cardiology service. He/she will have broad experience in all aspects of clinical cardiology, with particular expertise in complex device therapy and ICC/Heart Failure. The appointee will participate in the cardiology on-call rota, teaching programmes and will be eligible for Clinical Teacher status in the University of Nottingham.
This post will include 3-4 sessions of work per week in the cardiac catheter labs. The workload will compromise a mixture of elective and non-elective simple / complex device implantation. Dependent upon experience the appointee will also deliver ICC/Heart Failure Service. Most activity will be delivered within the tertiary centre at NUH. The appointee will participate in the Consultant of the week rota rotating through the Acute Cardiac Unit and in-patient wards currently on a 3:20 rotation. They will also participate in the QMC rota. Weekend oncall is 48 hours from Saturday 9am until Monday 9am also on a 1:10. On-call frequency may change with future appointments and service improvements. Time off in-lieu is given for weekend working. Every new post within the department of Medicine now has a commitment to General Medicine to help with the flow of patients from the Emergency Dept. This post has a commitment of 0.5 PA per week for Medicine. The logistics of this contribution can be negotiated in various ways including Medical Receiving clinics, Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) or running of the Winter Pressure ward.
About us
Secondary and tertiary cardiology services are delivered on both NUH campuses, at Queens Medical Centre (QMC) and Nottingham City Hospital (NCH). The tertiary catchment covers Nottingham and surrounding districts, North Nottinghamshire, and parts of Lincolnshire and Derbyshire (population approximately 1.3 million). Secondary cardiology services in Nottingham are provided over both campuses, with the majority of acute cardiac admissions coming through the emergency department based on the QMC campus.
The Trent Cardiac Centre (TCC) is a bespoke cardiac services building providing two new cardiac catheter laboratories, a day case unit, and day case echocardiography. There are also two cardiac surgical theatres, dedicated cardiac intensive care and high dependency units, and combined cardiology and cardiac surgical ward accommodation
