Lead Midwife for Parent Education

Job responsibilities

Lead and deliver a full parent education programme that is customised to meet the needs of the population, ensuring all families have the relevant information and support they require.

To be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of the parent education programme.

To be a visible point of contact for parents-to-be and staff to access information with regards to parent education.

Deliver excellence in care by utilising available resources effectively, ensuring that every woman, birthing person and their family receives the highest standard of parent education.

To act as a role model and lead by example to ensure that the dignity, rights and confidentiality of women and birthing people are protected and maintained in accordance with national standards and guidelines.

To effectively manage expectations of women, birthing people and their families.

To act as an advocate for the rights and diverse needs of women, birthing people and their families, creating an inclusive environment, respecting and celebrating diversity.

To have awareness and advocate for those who may experience barriers to accessing parent education.

To continuously monitor service provision by obtaining patient feedback.

To provide a safe environment to meet the needs of women and birthing people.

To be conversant with professional developments that affect the delivery of care.

To contribute towards maintaining an environment conducive to learning and development.

To deal appropriately with positive and negative feedback from women and birthing people, recognising the wider implication for the department, wards and unit.

To provide an authoritative and credible source of knowledge and specialist clinical advice/information to the team.

To take an active role in self-development, objectively reviewing own performance in terms of management, clinical skills and practice and decision making.

Identify own development requirements and take appropriate steps to meet those needs.

Keep abreast of clinical and professional developments and be able to demonstrate this in clinical practice.

Responsible for maintaining own, and contributes to the maintenance of others, professional standards by consistently demonstrating a high standard of personal and professional behaviour.

To be able to represent the service at Trust-wide level.

To take responsibility for audit of workload/patterns and circulate as necessary.

Maintain professional competence and knowledge through appraisal, training and reflective practice in accordance with NUH and NMC requirements.

Ensure awareness and adherence to Policies and Procedures including Health and Safety legislation, clinical incident reporting, infection control, child protection, data protection and information governance.

Undergo mandatory training relevant to enable safe midwifery practice.

Identify and evaluate new ways of improving performance and implementing evidence-based care for women.

Teach both registered and non-registered staff and act as practice supervisor to student midwives completing relevant documentation as necessary.

Contribute to induction programmes for new staff, acting as a preceptor to assist in their orientation and integration into the team.

Monitor and maintain quality and effectiveness of midwifery practice through implementing evidence-based practice and by participating in clinical audit, patient satisfaction surveys and research/trials as required to meet the needs of the service and to improve care for women and birthing people.

Any other duty as reasonably required for the role.

Training & Qualifications

Essential

• Registered Midwife
• SSSA qualified
• Demonstrates continuous personal and professional development
• Currently working within a maternity setting
• Minimum of 2 years' experience at band 6 level

Desirable

• Qualification in delivering parent education programmes
• Experience of working in a variety of maternity settings
• Willingness to undertake relevant further study as required for the post

Experience

Essential

• Evidence of ability to supervise pre-registered and registered staff
• Experience within all aspects of midwifery care
• Ability to convey sensitive information in an empathetic manner to patients, relatives, carers and staff
• Evidence of teaching in groups

Desirable

• Using feedback to enhance and future proof the service
• Knowledge and utilisation of the Birth Trauma Report in practice
• Understanding of clinical governance in relation to the role

Communication and Relationship Skills

Essential

• Demonstrates effective written and verbal communication skills
• Produce timely, accurate written/electronic records and documents
• Demonstrates basic IT skills
• Demonstration of team working and ability to work within a team
• Ability to communicate effectively to a group
• Able to utilise different communication methods depending on the individual needs of the service user

• Physically able to perform the full range of midwifery duties

• Full UK driving licence and ability to travel to locations across the Trust footprint as the needs of the service require
