Waste Compliance Officer

Job summary

To audit and monitor the operation of a Trust Wide Waste Management Strategy in line with current legislative requirements.

To support the Waste Services Manager in the design, implementation, management and review the Trust's Waste Management system across all relevant dimensions to ensure compliance with statutory regulations: Policy, Risk assessment, Standard Operational Procedures, Training, Auditing and ongoing improvement.

  • To support in the monitoring of compliance with all Statutory Instruments and best practice guidance in relation to waste management.
  • To carry out audits in Trust areas to ensure compliance of local waste management procedures with Trust Policy.
  • To carry out periodical Duty of Care audits and Pre-acceptance Audits in the premise of the Trust's waste contractors
  • To carry out spot checks to identify compliance with SOPs.
  • To assist departments in introducing changes to their operation aiming to be complaint.

Collaborate with other NHS Trusts sharing best practice.

To audit and monitor the operation of a Trust Wide Waste Management Strategy in line with current legislative requirements.

To undertake regular planned and unscheduled audits across all Trust sites for clinical and non-clinical waste streams ensuring areas audited have feedback on the findings.

To undertake, at least annually, due diligence checks and Duty of Care Audits on the waste contractors to ensure legislative compliance.

To assist in the monitoring of the quantity and types of waste produced from each area and in the development of league tables.

To assist in ensuring that the waste records management systems are operating and can be audited as required by external agencies if required.

To provide waste compliance advice to Estates, Facilities, Infection Control, Medical and Nursing Staff as required and within the limits of the job-holder's knowledge

To assist in the generation of monthly waste management data using a range of IT applications to create reports to inform the KPI reports relating to waste.

To contribute to the development, implementation, audit and monitoring of the Trust Waste Management and Handling Strategy in relation to Waste Compliance in line with current legislative requirements.

sTraining & Qualifications

Essential

  • Educated to GCSE (grade C or above) standard or equivalent including English Language and Maths
  • Diploma in an environmental or waste related discipline and/or demonstrate an equivalent level of knowledge and experience.
  • Knowledge of waste handling procedures and storage including the different types of waste streams in a large organisation

Desirable

  • Working towards a degree qualification in a waste or environmental discipline
  • Project management qualification.
  • CIWM (WAMITAB) Waste qualification

Experience

Essential

  • Previous experience working in a large organisation dealing with a variety of waste management issues.
  • Knowledge of administrative procedures, including using various IT systems and project management methodologies.
  • Competent in the use of MS Office products, specifically Excel and Project with the ability to generate own reporting templates.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Environmental and Waste management procedures, legislation and best practice.
  • Experience of policy and procedures development and implementation within the post holders area.
  • Experience of working with project plans and computerised information systems.

Desirable

  • Previous NHS experience in a similar role.
  • Experience of delivering waste management services within the healthcare sector
  • Detailed knowledge of health and safety.

  • Excellent written and oral communication and report writing/presentation skills with the ability to explain complex issues clearly for a range of audiences.
  • Ability to receive specialist advice and provide this information to users and other estates professionals to enable them to act accordingly.
