Professional Leadership
Provides expert professional leadership across NUH with regards to Systemic AntiCancer treatment (SACT) practice
Contribute to the identification and management of organisational risk by providing expert advice to the organisation on the impacts of legislation, policy and statutory guidance
Lead the development and delivery of NUHs agendas and work-plans where relevant to SACT
Through partnerships with key stakeholders establish and support the delivery of new models of care for SACT in line with national and local priorities for cancer care.
Gather, analyse, interpret and present extensive and or complex data andinformation to facilitate service development and contribute to service planning, commissioning and delivery.
Develop and maintain communication with professionals and service users on complex matters, issues and ideas and or in complex situations.
Enhance chemotherapy nursing within NUH and develop this role to strengthen nursing leadership within chemotherapy services across the Trust.
Demonstrate advanced knowledge and skills in intravenous access, the management of central venous catheters, cannulation and chemotherapy delivery, including the management of anaphylaxis, extravasation and cytotoxic spillage.
Act in an expert role promoting development of advanced nursing as a role model.
Have an appreciation of national and international standards and advise on shaping of services to meet local need.
Network across organisational boundaries and be proactive in establishingappropriate relationships and partnerships to positively influence healthcare delivery within both secondary and primary care.
Actively contribute to practice by publishing and disseminating developments in chemotherapy and patient care. Present findings and information at regional and national meetings and conferences.
Develop and lead a patient forum to support service development initiatives
Education and Development
Provide leadership for the provision of appropriate SACT education and training across the Trust.
In conjunction with the Clinical Educators across the trust, identify learning needs of nurses working within chemotherapy delivery. In cooperation with the appropriate managers the post-holder will be expected to identify how these learning needs are to be met and to ensure that appropriate processes are in place to record the entire learning taking place.
Support professionals to develop their skills in assessment and early intervention actions to reduce harm from SACT delivery.
Initiate new programmes of education for staff to be able to be accountable for their practice through professional education and enable others to develop and apply their knowledge and skills in practice providing timely feedback.Initiate new programmes of education and training to facilitate changes in practice and develop roles in relation to SACT
Lead and contribute to national and local forums to share best practice and ensure evidence based practice.
Provide information, advice, education and training for patients and theirrelatives/carers, including the development of specific patient information literature and health promotion campaigns.
Policy/Governance
Ensure the delivery of chemotherapy services across the Trust complies with national policy and national standards including the National QualitySurveillance programme via attendance and participation at the Chemotherapy strategy group and Chemocare Governance Group.
Monitor and interpret changes to legislation and national statutory guidance and its impact to NUH.
Initiate, develop monitor and continually review and evaluate organisational strategies, policies and procedures to ensure that they remain current and responsive to the needs of the service users and staff.Support the Lead Clinicians in the preparation, monitoring and work programme for chemotherapy aligned to the National Quality Surveillance Programme indicators.
Oversees and monitors the quality and timeliness of nursing care in accordance with relevant professional standards.
Lead the development of benchmarking initiatives relating to chemotherapy and contribute to the Trust's Clinical Governances Agenda.
Ensure that current risk assessments relating to SACT are monitored, updated, and communicated appropriately.
Monitor chemotherapy related incidents on Datix, highlight areas of concern and advise on any actions required as appropriate.
Maintain existing, and develop new links with existing partnerships ie Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Communication
Ensures effective communication channels exist between patients and relevant stakeholders at all levels which support partnership working
Motivates and persuades others through advanced communication skills, using written and electronic information where needed.
Demonstrates an expert ability to communicate highly complex and sensitive information to a variety of people
Supports patients and staff in handling complaints and works to ensure early resolution of concerns.
Acts as the patient advocate when necessary and inform and educate them regarding their treatment options, enabling patients to make informed choices, referring back to clinician where appropriate.
Encourage communication with patients, visitors and staff and throughobservations of practice and monitoring of standards ensure the maintenance of an optimal environment for patient care.
Works closely with the patients and service users to consult with and involve patients in service development and modernisation.
Interprets information provided by staff and patients to inform the organisation on how services for patients can be improved upon.
Ensures staff and stakeholders are updated on service changes and have the opportunity to communicate comments and concerns.
Service Delivery and Improvement
Represents and provides nursing expertise and advice to business and operational discussions meetings and forums.
Lead Quality Improvement initiatives working with MDTs across the organisation.
Identify measure and monitor key outcomes in this area of practice demonstrating continuous improvements.Advise and lead on the delivery of new and novel therapies including immunotherapy in collaboration with the wider team.
Represents and provides nursing expertise and advice to business and operational discussions meetings and forums.
Instigate practice changes in response to performance analysis and evaluate their effectiveness.
Work alongside senior nursing colleagues to maintain and improve standards of patient safety, quality and performance in line with divisional and trust priorities
Partake in the senior nursing rota for completion of audits and dashboards
Work flexibly to support the matron team with operational duties if the demands warrant additional senior nursing leadership
Research and Audit
Actively promote and lead on nursing research relating to SACT across the Trust
Lead on regular audit of the chemotherapy service and present findings to relevant forums within Care Groups and/or Directorates.
Contribute to audit and research by presenting work nationally and or internationally in a wide range of forums ie articles, posters, or verbally at conferences.
