This new post represents an exciting development in the Orthogeriatrics and Trauma and Orthopaedic departments in Nottingham. This is a large department with 80-100 inpatient Orthopaedic and Major Trauma patients. The post will involve the medical care of adult Orthopaedic inpatients of all ages. For patents over the age of 60 this will be as part of the excellent Orthogeriatric team reporting to our HCOP Consultants. For patients under 60, direct supervision will come from the Orthopaedic Consultant team interfacing between T&O and relevant medical specialties. This is a new model of Orthopaedic care, building on the great success in improving outcomes through Orthogeriatric care seen in our older patients.
Main duties of the job
Post holders can expect:
To build upon postgraduate clinical experience and CT / middle grade experience (or equivalent).
To develop further expertise in the identification and management of the sick patient.
To gain experience and familiarity in identifying and managing a wide variety of medical conditions, including making appropriate decisions regarding the need for admission, the development of strategies which might provide an alternative to admission and identifying where early discharge would be safe and appropriate.
To further develop skills of history taking, physical examination, appropriate investigation and rational prescribing.
To master a number of procedural techniques.
To hone communication skills with patients, relatives and colleagues.
To develop skills in managing time and conflicting priorities.
To increasingly work towards independent practice at Registrar level, leading ward rounds, assessing patients, making decisions etc. with consultant support and supervision.
