Job summary

The Electrodiagnostic Clinic provides a specialist service for the electrophysiological and psychophysical investigation of patients, with particular emphasis on the assessment of hearing and vision.

A wide range of complex electrophysiological and psychophysical investigations are carried out on babies, children and adults in the Clinic, on the wards, or in the operating theatres. Auditory patients are referred to the Clinic from the Newborn Hearing Screening Programme (NHSP), the Children's Hearing Assessment Centre (CHAC), ENT, the Cochlear Implant Programme and from other Trusts and organisations in the Nottinghamshire area and beyond.

The post holder will act as a lead specialist for the provision of a broad range of complex and highly specialised auditory electrodiagnostic techniques as required within the Electrodiagnostic Clinic.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the job will be to undertake evoked potentials auditory testing (ABR, ASSR, ACR, nABR, CM, o +cVEMP) on a wide range of patients for a large and leading centre in the field.

The role involves interpreting sometimes highly complex data and imparting the results to a number of audiences, from patients to consultants

2 Policy and service development

2.1 Identify and propose service developments within the Electrodiagnostics service in close collaboration with Departmental staff and our service users.

2.2 Participate in the development and implementation of policies and procedures for the Electrodiagnostics service including:

a. Writing and reviewing procedures to an appropriate standard, ensuring they are evidence based, conform to national standards or guidelines and are regularly reviewed and agreed, as appropriate, with appropriate parties.

2.3 Participate in the integrated management system that ensures that the work of the section is delivered in accordance with agreed national and international standards, e.g. IQIPs and/or ISO9000:2000, guidance notes and codes of practice including:

a. Ensure all activities comply with legislation and standards relevant to the Groups areas of work.

3 Physical and financial resources

3.1 Be responsible for the safe use and maintenance of the assets of the Electrodiagnostics service. Ensure that all equipment used is appropriate for the task, set up equipment around the patient in a safe and appropriate way for testing, subject to necessary quality control programs and that a planned replacement program exists.

3.2 Assist the Head of Evoked Potentials to provide advice and support to the Trust and external customers on the specification, evaluation, procurement, installation and safe use of Electrodiagnostics equipment worth hundreds of thousands of pounds.

4 Human resources

4.1 Participate in the general management of the Clinic, including the production of test protocols, audit and clinical governance.

4.2 Undertake clinical supervision of technicians, clinical scientists and trainees undertaking investigations in the clinic, as required.

4.3 Train and lecture to medical colleagues, clinical scientists and other healthcare professionals, within the Trust, elsewhere in the UK, and overseas, in the appropriate usage of electrodiagnostic investigations.

4.4 Assist with and ensure that staff are appropriately trained.

4.5 Ensure personal compliance with mandatory, professional and personal development, according to the needs of the service; including Continuing Professional Development (CPD), as required.

5 Information resources

5.1 Be responsible for the writing, quality and independently authorising of reports on investigations in the clinic

5.2 Maintain patient records associated with the service to the highest standard

5.3 Ensure the quality of data you enter onto the Electrodiagnostics patient database

5.4 Maintain appropriate confidentiality, storage, distribution and analysis of patient identifiable information and patient test results

5.5 Use commercial software to create reports, spreadsheets and databases for management of own work and administrative purposes

6 Research & Development

6.1 Initiate, supervise, carry out or assist with fundamental research related to auditory electrodiagnostics, with the aim of better understanding of the auditory system and its disorders, and improving the diagnostic efficiency of clinical investigations and procedures

6.2 Collaborate with equipment manufacturers in the development of new devices to meet current international standards and provide improved diagnostic application

6.3 Present research findings at local, national and international scientific conferences and clinical conferences, either as invited presentations or proffered papers
