Job summary

This post is primarily intended for trainees in Plastic Surgery who have completed Core Training and are working towards a UK national training grade post in Plastic surgery. The post does not carry SAC or college approval for training. We will also consider doctors that already have experience in Plastic Surgery and are trying to gain specialist registration in the UK. It isessential that the candidate has passed the MRCS or is able to demonstrate equivalent competencies and has a minimum of plastic surgery experience of 12 to 18 months as a core trainee. This post is based in the Plastic Surgery Department which operates in both the Nottingham City Hospital and the Queens Medical Centre. The exact location of an individual post will depend on rotations, however, when on call the successful candidate will cover both campuses.

Main duties of the job

The department provides opportunities for exposure to a wide range of plastic and reconstructive surgery: The department undertakes breast reconstruction and oncoplastic breast surgery, hand surgery and skin cancer surgery. It is the regional unit for Burns, Cleft lip and Palate, Sarcoma, and Major Trauma. There are also opportunities for involvement working alongside other specialities involving major trauma and lower limb reconstruction, Head and Neck, Chest Wall and Gynaecological reconstruction.

Job responsibilities

Emergency (non-elective)

The successful candidate will be part of a 1 in 9 registrar on call rota. The successful candidate will be expected to act as a competent member of the on call team. This includes professional communication with colleagues and the team and organisation/provision of initial patient care. Care may include initial management of common Plastic Surgery emergencies including major burns (adult and paediatric) and operative management of basic hand trauma including tendon and nerve repairs.

Elective

The successful candidate will principally work with a consultant or team of consultants within a plastic surgery subspecialty but may be required to cover in other plastic surgery specialties to ensure emergency service provision by the department. All trainees rotate specialty placements on a four or six monthly basis. Successful candidates will attend clinics, theatre sessions and ward rounds as per allocation in a weekly timetable within City campus site and the Queens medical centre site and ensure patient documentation/communication is kept up to date as part of care.

The successful candidate will be required to know the patients that are under the care of the subspecialties and helps with the running of the Department.
