Job responsibilities
PATIENT CARE, CLINICAL EXPERTISE AND CASE MANAGEMENT
Manage a caseload of patients, as appropriate within the speciality, delivering individualised and personalised direct patient care.
Provide clinical expertise, specialist advice and support across the whole spectrum of the service, liaising with the East Midlands Maternal Medicine Network as required.
Adopt a range of principles appropriate to client group in order to improve and streamline patient care and patient experience.
Demonstrate in depth specialist knowledge, skills and innovative practice in the specialist area, leading the delivery of appropriate evidence based care, and advanced practice.
Support, assist and encourage the multi-disciplinary team in resolving complex patient problems, by the provision of new and innovative models of case management.
Lead the specialist midwifery contribution to the service, in the delivery of high standards of patient care whilst acting as a role model.
Demonstrate appropriate expert practice and specialist advice in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care. This will necessitate high levels of autonomy and advocacy.
PATIENT AND PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT AND EXPERIENCE
Promote the philosophy of women centred care and establish and maintain a supportive relationship with the woman and her family at all times.
Promote patient and public involvement and enhance their experience by developing new initiatives that support women centred care.
Contribute to the Directorate and Service strategies for raising the profile of patient and public involvement and embedding this within own sphere of practice.
PROMOTE AND ESTABLISH EFFECTIVE TEAM WORKING AND COMMUNICATION
Take overall responsibility for ensuring effective communication between all service providers within the speciality.
Provide and establish good positive working relationships with the Senior Midwifery Team, Head of Nursing and Midwifery, Ward Managers and their teams, Practice Development Lead, relevant Clinicians, Service Managers and General Managers.
Develop and promote working partnerships between the Trust and academic staff at local Universities involved in the provision of nursing, midwifery and multi professional programmes of education.
Actively participate in local, national and international networking to maintain and develop expert level of knowledge in the speciality.
Ensure that the importance and implications of education, research, and ideas are raised in appropriate forums.
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND PRACTICE DEVELOPMENT
Lead the implementation of specialist education and training to all members of the clinical team and midwifery staff within the Directorate in collaboration with the Practice Development Matron. Working with the Directorate Education and Practice Development Lead to ensure that specialist education and training meets the needs of the service, multi-professional clinical teams, patients and carers.
Actively encouraging lifelong learning and personal development through appraisal and Knowledge and Skills framework (KSF) development plans.
Lead the development of a women focused education and information giving strategy within the speciality.
Demonstrate continuous evaluation of practice and make changes where appropriate, within the defined speciality.
Use Education forums and Networks proactively sharing good practice and innovation with others.
Liaise with other groups and assist with the delivery of multi-professional and interprofessional learning.
Provide specialist education teaching, learning and mentoring for pre and post registration students when required and actively contribute to the delivery of the Universities curriculum.
CLINICAL GOVERNANCE, AUDIT AND RESEARCH
Influence and develop policy making and clinical guidelines internally and externally, necessary to support the specialist midwifery service.
Lead and participate in audit and research and benchmarking activities to ensure effective safe and evidence based practice.
Promote and encourage midwifery practice research in all relevant clinical areas supporting the NUH Non-Medical research strategy.
Provide and promote clinical excellence that reflects the Trusts Clinical Governance Strategies to include meeting the Standards for Better Health.
Promote the speciality by publishing and presenting innovations and research findings locally and nationally.
Actively promote the specialist service through dissemination of in-depth specialist knowledge, both locally and nationally, establishing robust networks.
Identify, and develop proposals and business cases as required for future service innovation.
Act as a role model and clinical resource demonstrating high standards of care and providing clinical leadership in the specialist area.
Liaise with the East Midlands Maternal Medicine to ensure that audit and research findings inform and change practice as appropriate.
RISK MANAGEMENT AND PATIENT SAFETY
Ensure that specialist knowledge, skills and innovative practice is delivered, in order to provide a high standard of patient care and maintain patient safety.
Actively promote infection prevention and control awareness using best practice to reduce the potential for cross infection.
Ensure patient safety through programmes of effective and relevant education and staff compliance with policies and practices.
Facilitate the implementation of new ways of working that benefits patient safety and the patient user experience.
As a clinical expert provide advice and support to assist with the management of complaints relating to their speciality and implement action plans or change of practices.
PROMOTE EFFECTIVE CLINICAL LEADERSHIP
A visible, accessible and assertive clinical expert to which staff and users can turn to for assistance, expert advice and support.
Provide a high level of professional leadership in the development, management and promotion of the service and the team.
Actively contribute to strategic and operational developments relating to the speciality / midwifery service, so that high quality patient focused services are promoted.
Contribute to the Antenatal Services Manager of the Day responsibilities including cover in the absence Antenatal Services managers.
GOVERNANCE
Responsible for ensuring appropriate systems are in place to evidence ongoing compliance with local and national policies as required for CQC standard.
To participate in research / audit which may lead to improvements in quality of care through development of standards and guidelines
Be aware of the individual midwifes responsibility for effective use of Trusts resources and good time management.
SPECIALITY SPECIFIC
To be responsible for leading the midwifery care of pregnant women with complex medical conditions.
Collaborate with other members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure the provision of an effective and appropriate pathway of care.
To contribute to the planning and implementing of standards of care, Policies, Guidelines and service change, that impact both within and beyond own area of practice. To continually evaluate and audit the quality of patient care.
To provide a visible profile in the clinics, having clinical and advisory input into the care of pregnant women with complex medical conditions in pregnancy.
Be responsible for the smooth running of the clinics, coordinating staffing and ensuring adequate resources
Coordinate care for out of area women within the Speciality and East Midlands Maternal Medicine Network.
Provide leadership to support the delivery of evidenced based woman centred midwifery care for women with medical conditions in pregnancy.
Promote effective teamwork and collaborative relationships within maternal medicine, the multidisciplinary team and across health care settings to optimise their involvement with complex care pathways and improve health outcomes for pregnant women.
Will facilitate and have continuing responsibility for the effective assessment, implementation and evaluation of all midwifery care for women with complex medical conditions, within own sphere of clinical practice both in clinic and delivery suite
Demonstrate comprehensive holistic assessment of patients utilising a variety of advanced clinical skills, while acting as a role model, in line with the Midwife Specialist role for the service.
Promote and initiate innovations and change related to improvement of clinical services in relation to the speciality
WORKING CONDITIONS
Ability to work across all sites including the community setting. Physical effort to enable post holder to deliver clinical maternity care. On-call responsibilities as required.
