Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) is nationally recognised as having an established Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) service, with ACPs embedded across 18 specialties. We are now seeking committed, enthusiastic and compassionate individual/s to train as an ACP to join our Respiratory team to deliver the highest quality care to our patients. Successful applicants will undertake an MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice as an apprentice at The University of Nottingham and follow our supported and established three year ACP training pathway.
The respiratory department is led by a group of senior Respiratory Consultants, and delivers secondary and tertiary care. Our team of experienced respiratory ACPs provide cover to the Respiratory Assessment Unit and Respiratory Same Day Emergency Care Unit. The SDEC Unit was set up and is primarily staffed by ACPs providing rapid assessment of patients alongside an experienced nursing team. We also offer an inreach service to ED to provide autonomous early intervention to patients who present at the QMC campus. Our goal is to provide the best possible care in this busy and thriving department. The trainee can expect to encounter conditions ranging from common acute respiratory presentations such as such as asthma and COPD, respiratory infections, and complications of lung cancer; to more complex conditions.
Main duties of the job

The training pathway consists of: Year 1: appointed as a band 6 and work within the trainee's appropriate role in the department. The trainee is released 15 hours a week to complete year 1 of the MSc. Year 2: The trainee is full-time supernumerary and starts the work-based learning and non-medical prescribing modules. Trainees receive supervision time, competency sign off, ACP mentorship and structured teaching. Following completion of non-medical prescribing and a percentage of the portfolio tACPs will be awarded a band 7. Year 3: following completion of the year 2 modules and the portfolio, tACPs will undertake a VIVA, once completed the tACPs will undertake a supported transition onto the rota with a supervisory period. When the final gateway assessments/modules are completed the trainee will advance to a band 8a qualified ACP. Once qualified, along with clinical work across the department the individual will have weekly rostered time to undertake their own continued professional development alongside service development work. Although the post holders specialty may be based at one campus the training pathway may involve placements or visits at either the City Campus or the Queens Medical Centre. They will have excellent communication skills, and be able to liaise with patients and their families in planning their care. They will be expected to provide evidence of their ongoing continuing professional development. Whilst in training the tACP will undertake the MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice as an apprentice; included in the curriculum are non-medical prescribing and work-based learning modules. As well as the academic pathway the tACP will follow the three year consultant-supported ACP training program mapped against established national and regional competencies. The tACP will gain the skills under direct consultant supervision to undertake clinical assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients with undiagnosed and undifferentiated conditions.
