Job summary

Applications are invited for the above full-time posts within Trauma and Orthopaedics at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, starting in August 2024 - August 2025. The successful applicant will work in the Orthopaedic Trauma unit at the Queen's Medical Centre Campus, which is the busiest Major Trauma Centre in the United Kingdom and likely serves a population within the East Midlands region of England estimated to be around 4.8 million people.

This post is covered by the Medical Dental Staff Terms and Conditions of service and recognised by the SAC for professional training in Trauma and Orthopaedics, but does not carry NTN. It will provide training in line with ISCP. This post is designed to support and bridge the gap between CT2 and ST3. Day time responsibilities will include being on-call, supporting trauma operating theatres, care of patients on the ward and fracture clinics. The successful candidate will provide day to day training at the equivalent of the ST3 grade and will also support either the junior on call rota (SHO grade) or middle grade rota (SpR grade) depending on experience. Applications from doctors finishing Foundation Year 2 and looking for additional orthopaedic experience prior to starting Core Training are also encouraged.

Main duties of the job

  • In-patient accountabilities require reception and management of emergency referrals for injured patients from the Emergency Department along with elective patients under the direction of respective consultants
  • Routine ward responsibilities transfer and discharge summaries and operating theatre duties are a key component of the Senior Trauma Fellow role
  • Out-patient responsibilities will include supporting orthopaedic fracture clinics
  • Teaching Medical Students

There is a very active postgraduate programme with a clinical conference, lecture and seminar each week during term time. All posts will have a name clinical/ educational supervisor. There is an active audit programme. The appointee's will be expected to play a full part in the research and audit of the department and able to demonstrate this through publication and presentation.

Fifteen Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons are actively involved in the adult in-patient and out-patient Trauma and Orthopaedic service. The successful candidates will work at both the Queens Medical Centre and the Treatment Centre.

Children's trauma and orthopaedics for Nottingham is carried out at Queen's Medical Centre (QMC) under the care of five consultant orthopaedic surgeons. There are six orthopaedic hand surgeons based at QMC who run an acute hand take shared with the plastic surgeons.
