Job summary

The Environmental Officer oversees the performance of the Trust, making sure environmental standards and legislation are met.

As an environmental officer, you'll ensure that the Trust is operating in accordance with environmental guidelines and targets. Your role will involve examining corporate activities to determine where improvements can be made and ensuring compliance with environmental legislation across the organisation.

Main duties of the job

You will be responsible to create, implement and monitor environmental strategies to promote sustainable development.

Your wide remit means you'll review the whole operation, carrying out environmental audits and assessments, identifying and resolving environmental problems and ensuring necessary changes are implemented.

You will provide reports to the governance structure and external agencies (e.g. Environment Agency, Nottingham City Council, etc.) as and when needed (e.g. discharging conditions form environmental permits and licenses, etc.).

Job responsibilities

Develop and implement environmental strategies and action plans, to ensure corporate sustainable development.

Take the lead on sustainable procurement for all goods and services.

Co-ordinate all aspects of pollution control, waste management, recycling, environmental health, conservation and renewable energy.

Support the implementation of environmental policies and practices.

Ensure compliance with environmental legislation and keep up to date with UK, European Union and international regulation and legislation.

Liaise with relevant bodies such as local authorities, public bodies and competent bodies (ie. Environment Agency).

Audit, analyse and report environmental performance to internal departments and regulatory bodies.

Carry out impact assessments to identify, assess and reduce an organisation's environmental risks and financial costs.

Promote and raise awareness, at all levels of an organisation, of the impact of emerging environmental issues.

Implement best practice in areas of corporate, ethical and social responsibility and address any issues arising.

Develop and implement environmental management systems to continually improve the impact of the Trust on the environment.

Co-ordinate public hearings and consultations on environmental matters.

Essential

  • Educated to degree level in an environmental discipline or equivalent level of knowledge.

Desirable

  • Working towards a post graduate qualification in an environmental discipline, Prince 2 Foundation qualification, Microsoft Project qualification, QSIR Practitioner

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working in an environmental discipline ideally within the NHS environment.
  • Knowledge of administrative procedures, including using various IT systems and project management methodologies.
  • Specialist knowledge and understanding of Environmental and legislation and best practice

Desirable

  • Detailed knowledge of health and safety.
  • Detailed knowledge of auditing.
