Job summary

The post holder will work in the Medical Division acting as the Divisional Bronze contact on a daily basis. The role has 2 key management functions; operational site management and managing patient flow throughout the Medicine Division. The role will also have responsibility for providing advice and support to clinical teams across Medicine Division both in and out of hours. The post holder will work closely with the ward teams, medicine bed managers and transfer team in order to manage patient flow effectively.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will maintain a clear focus on the management of emergency patient flow, working to ensure that all emergency patients are admitted in a timely manner, based on clinical priority and balanced with the wider Trust constraints around elective patient services. The Medicine Bronze will work with the Matrons and bed managers across the Medicine Division to support the effect management of flow and capacity across both QMC and City Campus.

The role includes internal rotation including weekend and nights.

To provide senior nursing support and advice to all clinical areas within the Medicine division and act as a point of call for queries.

To ensure the principles of patient flow and capacity allow safe and timely transfer of patients from the Emergency Department, AMRA and admission units to the wards in the Medicine Division and other divisions.

To participate in and support the Trusts emergency response team with cardiac arrests within non-ward areas and other clinical emergencies and major incidents/ business continuity incidents within the Medicine Division.

To review discharges planned for the next 24 hrs and ensure that patients are discharge ready and early use of the discharge lounge is facilitated.

Essential

  • Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills, computer literacy
  • Ablility to multi task, organise communicate calmly and effectively to complete tasks under pressure in a busy enviroment
  • Previous extensive experience of using Healthcare related IT systems for documentation and communication

Desirable

  • Evidence of Previous communication or leadership course such as difficult conversations course
  • Evidence of excellent written and verbal communication in a timed high pressure environment
  • Excellent IT skills and awareness of trust IT systems and their use regarding patient flow at management level

Skills and qualifications

Essential

  • Ability to care for and monitor acutely unwell patients in a hospital setting
  • Ablility to multi task, organise communicate calmly and effectively to complete tasks under pressure in a busy enviroment
  • Ability to work independently with good time management and organisation
  • Current NMC pin

Desirable

  • Evidence of leadership training, improvement project or further academic study
  • Previous healthcare experience dealing with complex patients and their acuity needs

Essential

  • Extensive Clinical background within the acute hospital setting
  • Previous experience as Nurse in charge

Desirable
