Job summary

We are seeking appoint a highly motivated Locum Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetist to join the friendly, supportive and dynamic team that forms the Anaesthetic Department at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.

Nottingham University Hospitals Trust was created by the merger of Queen's Medical Centre (QMC) and Nottingham City Hospital. Nottingham Children's Hospital is co-located at QMC. The anaesthetic department is part of the Clinical Support Division (CSD) and is represented at both campuses. The Paediatric Anaesthetic Departments is part of the QMC team and is operationally integrated with Nottingham Children's Hospital, Family Health Division (FH).

Main duties of the job

This post is in a team of 14 Paediatric Anaesthetic consultants. The appointment will offer an exciting opportunity to work with an enthusiastic team, to continue to develop the existing service, in particular augmenting delivery of emergency care and pre-operative assessment for elective surgery.

About us

The paediatric anaesthetic department supports a significant acute and elective paediatric surgical workload. Nottingham Children's Hospital provides specialist and regional services which include neonatal surgery, paediatric oncology, including radiotherapy, trauma orthopaedics, major trauma, neurosurgery, spinal surgery, cleft lip and palate services, ENT, maxillofacial surgery and ophthalmology.

The Divisional Director for CSD is Dr Thea De Beer and the Clinical Director for the Acute Pathway is Dr Hannah Sycamore. There is, in addition, a Head of Service on each campus; Dr Sumera Hussain at the City Campus and Dr Chris Harber at the QMC campus, supported by four Deputy Heads of Service. The successful applicant will report to Dr Suzanne Wake (DHoS). There is a Clinical Lead for Paediatric Anaesthesia, Dr Thomas Blanks.

Nottingham Children's Hospital is part of the Family Health (FH) division. The divisional director is Dr Emma Filmore. Dr Sophie Wilne is the Clinical Director of the Children's Hospital.

Clinical Skills/Experience

  • Training and experience requisite to meeting all aspects of the job plan, including on call work. Technical skills/competencies required for all aspects of the job plan. Ability to maintain clinical credibility and authority with a multi-professional team including senior trainees. Specific training and experience in anaesthesia for subspecialty work according to job plan and for emergency surgery. Evidence that relevant clinical skills/knowledge have been maintained.

Desirable

  • Specific training in communication skills Specific training in patient safety and/or human factors Anaesthesia fellowship in anaesthesia for upper abdominal or thoracics surgery
