Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a Consultant in Children and Young People's Emergency Medicine to join us at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust in one of the largest single-site Major Trauma Centers in the UK.

Our ED has an attendance of 195,000 new patients each year, including 45,000 children, seen in a co-located Children and Young People's Emergency Department, which has recently expanded its resuscitation capability with a major capital investment. We also have a large academic and clinical skills area and a strong education and research ethos.

As a member of our team, you will be responsible for children and young people's (CYP) emergency patients attending NUH ED under your care. This will include CYP major trauma patients and CYP patients requiring management in the resuscitation room ('resus').

You will be forward thinking and willing to work in a team as a role model and clinical leader alongside our multi-disciplinary workforce. Your experience, skills and knowledge will be used to think creatively, support others to develop to the best they can be and to be part of the vision to be a world-class center of excellence.

If you are eager to working in an ever developing major trauma centre and passionate about delivering a patient centred, caring service to the community, we would love to hear from you. Come and join our welcoming, friendly and forward thinking ED!

Main duties of the job

The shop-floor roster currently encompasses four different roles:

? Consultant in charge of the CYP Emergency Department

? Management of patients needing to be in the resus room

? Management of CYP major trauma patients

? See and review patients with junior staff

The continuing responsibility for the care of patients, as well as the proper functioning of the department, is the overarching responsibility of a consultant at NUH.

Ideally, you will have experience of working at a paediatric major trauma centre and have a keen interest in current childhood health issues (including public health issues e.g. obesity) and their impact upon Paediatric Emergency Medicine .

CYP ED is co-located and staffed by paediatric trained nursing and medical staff in addition to ACP and ENPs. Our recently expanded department provides:

  • A bespoke paediatric resuscitation area

  • Increased cubicle capacity and waiting areas,

  • Areas for drug prescription and preparation

  • Suitable accommodation for distressed patients which maintains privacy and dignity

  • On site accommodation for CAMHS

There are close links with the acute paediatric team and the children's assessment unit including a liaison paediatrician working weekly in the emergency department, and bi-monthly acute and emergency paediatric meetings.

A proposed Job Plan, based on 10 PAs would be to commence at DCC 8.5 / SPA 1.5

About us

You will join a friendly and dedicated team of 30 Consultants, 4 of which are exclusively CYP focussed, working on a flexible annualised rostering system.

The Department has undergone major transformation of its leadership and governance framework to develop a distributed leadership model and structures and processes, fit for purpose for a modern ED.. We work closely with specialties in Specialty Interface Collaboratives (SICs), facilitating processes, governance and education/research across patient pathways.

NUH is the Major Trauma Centre for the biggest Trauma Network in the UK. The Department has a major focus on education and research with a unique co-located academic and clinical skills unit, DREEAM (the Department of Research and Education in Emergency medicine, Acute medicine and Major trauma), which has an ethos of multi-professional education and research

In 2021 our Emergency Department became the new home of Channel 4's BAFTA-nominated '24 Hours in A&E'. The documentary series marked its 10th year by relocating outside of London for the first time to NUH.

The show is currently playing on Channel 4 and offers viewers a look inside one of the country's busiest Emergency Departments , giving our staff a great opportunity to shine and show the friendliness, passion and skill of our team, and the care and kindness shown to patients and relatives.
