Job summary
Full-time, fixed term (12 months) Locum Consultant Physician in Acute Medicine and HCOP for Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.
This is an expansion post and offers an opportunity to join a happy and enthusiastic team of dedicated, highly skilled and forward thinking Acute Physicians, and also provides the opportunity to work alongside colleagues within a well established Healthcare of the Older Person (HCOP) department. We strive to offer not only the very best care for our patients, but also high quality training and support for our team and fulfilling, flexible careers for our Consultants. The team is committed to providing continuous service improvement.
Main duties of the job
The emergency department and acute medicine units are based on the QMC campus and the acute HCOP service has expanded from 5 to 8 wards over the last 4 years. There are 5 acute general HCOP wards (B48, B49, C51, C54 and D58), 2 subacute HCOP wards on City Campus (currently named Beeston and Jenner ward), and a Medical and Mental Health Unit (MMHU, B47). We also have responsibility for a medically stable ward Bestwood situated on the city Campus. The total number of beds across HCOP wards is approximately 260 including the assessment unit.
The MMHU on B47 was established as part of the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Medical Crises in Older People programme and provides 28 beds to provide specialist medical care for older patients with mental health problems, especially those with agitated delirium. Most patients are admitted directly from the medical admissions unit but some are transferred from other HCOP and non-HCOP wards. There are additional mental health nurses and therapists who form part of the larger than usual ward staffing establishment. There is also support from a consultant in old age psychiatry on 2 days per week and from the cross-Trust rapid response liaison psychiatry service.
About us
Our Acute and HCOP Medicine department is based on the Queen's Medical Centre campus. The service is being ambitiously and innovatively restructured, expanded and modernised. This work is already well underway but there are still opportunities for new colleagues to get involved and to influence the shape of our service going forward. Our vision for the service is a senior-led, front door service working across traditional boundaries and in close partnership with colleagues in the ED, Critical Care, medical specialties, and Primary Care.
NUH has a national and international reputation for high quality patient care and research, education and innovation. We have strong links to local universities. This allows for the provision of excellent training and education for students, as well as being a major research organisation.
We offer a wide range of staff benefits including:
- Access to Staff Wellbeing programme including free 24 hour advice and emotional support service, financial advice service, staff physiotherapy and staff support networks
- On site day nursery
- Amazon parcel collection points
