The Cancer and Associated Specialties (CAS) division has a diverse range of services within 3 directorates.

The medical directorate has a group of specialised medical services located at the City Hospital campus including haematology, oncology, renal and transplant, infectious disease and palliative care.

The surgical directorate contains specialised surgical services based at City with a focus on cancer services and includes urology, breast services, plastic surgery, thoracic surgery and sarcoma.

The Pathology directorate contains blood sciences, microbiology, cellular pathology and genomics - services are provided across both campuses.

The division has around 2500 staff with an operating income of around £300 million. Approximately half of the income is from specialised commissioning.

The division has 15 wards across the City campus.

Main duties of the job

The Deputy General Manager will have operational and strategic responsibilities within the Division under the direction of the Divisional General Manager, working across the varying teams with a focus on driving improvement related to operational and financial performance as well as quality and safety.

Working very closely with the Divisional General Manager, the Deputy will lead on key operational and strategic aspects of the Division allowing both close working with individual Directorates and specialties where needed, and also the opportunity to lead work which is cross cutting across multiple divisional areas.

You will play a key part working with the Divisional Leadership Team to ensure you have adequate oversight of the entire Division while allowing in-depth focus and leadership in key areas.

The role will support an individual looking to develop their knowledge and experience allowing some flexibility in portfolio in agreement with the Divisional General Manager.

Supporting the Divisional General Manager, working with the Divisional Leadership Team [DLT], the post-holder will have operational responsibility for services within the Division to ensure all key operational performance targets including: access; finance; workforce; and service improvements are achieved. This involves delivery of all operational performance targets, ensuring all services are provided within the agreed level of activity, standards of performance, safety, quality and budget.

The post-holder will act as a Deputy for the Divisional General Manager in their absence, attending meetings to represent the CAS Division and will report directly to the Divisional General Manager.

Supporting the Divisional General Manager, the post holder is responsible for the operational day to day planning, monitoring and delivery of all patient services within the Division.

Working as part of the DLT, the post holder will be responsible for the development of the Division and will be expected to make a positive contribution to the delivery of health services across the Trust.

The post-holder will be responsible for leading on and delivering success across a number of key programmes within the Division. These programmes will be essential in ensuring that the Division can deliver its primary objectives and targets over the years and will encompass a range of topics including productivity and efficiency, transformation, clinical effectiveness, quality and workforce succession planning.

Support the clinical and managerial leadership of the Trust, delivering a range of outcomes, ensuring that fundamental and underlying activities to organisational success are achieved.

To lead with other members of the DLT and other divisional and corporate management teams to ensure the effective and efficient delivery of services to clinical users and patients.
