Job summary

The Department of Anaesthesia at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust wishes to expand its existing team of Anaesthesia Associates, by appointing two highly motivated, proactive individuals who wish to train and qualify as Anaesthesia Associates. The standards of training are high and demanding on individuals to ensure a high calibre of Anaesthesia Associate graduate.

The role is being offered on an Annexe 21 basis, Band 7. This equates to 65% top step point of Band 7 for months 1-3 of the post, 70% top step point Band 7 for months 4-15 and 75% top step point of Band 7 for months 16 - 27. Following qualification in month 27, the post holder will be paid at the entry step point of Band 7.

Main duties of the job

The Anaesthesia Associate training programme is a 27-month full-time course, which culminates in the award of a Postgraduate Diploma by the University of Birmingham. The training programme comprises 24 months academic study and clinical training, followed by supervised clinical practice in the final three months. During this time, the post holder should develop their knowledge and skills by attendance at learning events, and should apply that knowledge to supporting safe anaesthesia delivery.

You will develop skills in pain management, ultrasound, vascular access, emergency airway management and deep sedation. Upon qualification and satisfactory performance, we anticipate that the post-holders would continue in a permanent Anaesthesia Associate post at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. The post will be challenging and varied, and it is envisaged that the scope of practice will broaden considerably over the coming years.

As this is a training post, some of the mentioned duties/responsibilities and skills will be developed or reinforced throughout training. We would expect the candidate to fulfil the core content by the end or shortly after qualification.

  • To develop your knowledge throughout the programme of the syllabus by attendance at learning events, and to apply that knowledge to supporting safe anaesthesia delivery.
  • The post holder will be accountable for their own professional actions whilst working under the supervision of consultant anaesthetists. On qualification, the Anaesthesia Associate is required to register on the managed Voluntary Register of the Royal College of Anaesthetists. It is anticipated that regulation of Anaesthesia Associates will fall within the remit of the General Medical Counsel (GMC) from late 2023.
  • To develop and improve services, e.g. by participation in audit, divisional meetings, and CPD.
  • To promote peoples equality, diversity and rights.
  • To assess and address peoples health and wellbeing needs pre-, intra- and post-operatively. Demonstrate the ability to respond to different changing anaesthetic needs of patients in your care.

  • To assist in the provision and development of a safe, effective and efficient anaesthetic service and to support the Trust in its aim to provide the best possible care to patients.
  • To provide anaesthetic services to include, delivering anaesthesia, monitoring and maintaining the condition of patients, and under supervision conduct the induction and emergence from anaesthesia.
  • To administer drugs for anaesthetic induction and maintenance, intra-operative fluids, post-operative analgesia and anti-emetics under the direction of a consultant anaesthetist.
  • To plan anaesthetic provision within a prescribed framework.
  • To undertake pre-operative and post-operative assessment of patients, including the recommendation of pre-medication where appropriate under direction of a consultant anaesthetist.
  • To evaluate and/or collect patient information from the patients history, physical examination, laboratory radiographic and other diagnostic date and identify relevant problems.
  • To administer and/or participate in the planned administration of general and regional anaesthesia for a variety of surgical and medically related procedures.
  • To use a variety of techniques, anaesthesia agents, drugs and equipment in providing anaesthesia care.
  • To interpret and utilise data obtained from invasive and non-invasive equipment.
  • To prioritise the care requirements for identified patients.
  • To competently demonstrate skills to assess and interpret acute patients conditions, taking appropriate action, recognising and managing emergencies. Supports and monitors care, promptly alerting the relevant person where there are unexpected changes in the patients condition.
