Job responsibilities

Act as an expert resource for the multi-professional team, specialty.

Be visible, accessible and assertive, coordinating all aspects of patient care and staff management on a daily basis.

Be a visible point of contact for patients, visitors and all the MDT acting as a resource for problems and needs.

Proactively seek feedback on patient and public experiences and act on recommendations as required.

Monitor the quality of patient care and ensure the highest standards of patient care (bench marking) are in place and reviewed accordingly. Devise clear action plans to address any care deficiencies and ensure agreed actions are implemented and evaluated.

Respond promptly on emerging clinical needs, complaints and incidents and develop and participate in appropriate action plans in line with clinical governance.

In conjunction with medical staff and other members of the multi-disciplinary team as appropriate, ensure patient care plans are regularly updated and changes implemented. Ensure the nursing records and documentation is maintained in accordance with NMC 'Guidelines for Records and Record Keeping 2002' and any other guidelines appropriate to other registered practitioners.

Lead and facilitate the development of clinical guidelines, protocols and patient care policies and procedures utilising benchmarking, risk assessments and best practice guidelines. Implement and ensure best practice is embedded within care delivery. Actively encourage the use of clinical information to improve the quality of patient care.

Work within the Trust's guidance laid down by the 'Working in New Ways' cross town working group, developing and establishing new procedures when required in accordance with the NMC 'Scope of Professional Practice'.

Lead the implementation of relevant new research based practice and encourages and facilitates active participation in research based projects, thus promoting clinical effectiveness. Actively encourage and support research and audit activity to build up the evidence base available.

Ensure confidentiality is maintained in all aspects and levels of communication especially pertaining to patients, carers and staff.

Facilitate communication, which results in clear responsibilities being identified within the multi- professional team.

Develop effective two-way communication between theatres, departments and the division to ensure the co-ordination of patient care and the smooth operational management of the unit/department.

Disseminate effective and appropriate patient care information across health care teams.

Lead effective team meetings to inform, engage and motivate. Ensure the team are kept informed of Corporate and Directorate policy, strategy and progress.

Ensure the delivery of care is in accordance with the policies, procedures, guidelines and practice of NUH NHS Trust and ensure all staff are up to date with such procedures.

Lead motivate and develop an effective team which works towards agreed goals. Establish a clear focus and direction for the team, ensuring all members understand their role within the team.

Lead the development of objectives and standards of clinical practice to support service aims.

Take a leading role in influencing service modernisation and service changes for own clinical area. Actively participate in service modernisation which indirectly impacts on specialty.

Contribute to the development and delivery of a corporate nursing and midwifery strategy, developing specialty practitioner objectives which support the delivery of nursing strategy.

Ensure nursing and support staff in the clinical area can acquire and maintain an appropriate repertoire of leadership and clinical skills, engage in professional development appropriate to their field of practice and continue to develop their practice in line with the Knowledge and Skills Framework (KSF).

Review team composition, performance and deficiencies to ensure the correct skill mix to provide quality patient care. Co-ordinate the process of recruitment of team members.

Establish a clear focus and direction for the team, allocate work amongst the team ensuring staff understand the purpose and objectives of the unit/department and their role within the team. Provide them with guidance and support in order for them to fulfil their roles.

Create a working climate which encourages flexible team working amongst staff whilst allowing them the opportunity to show initiative. Encourage staff to participate in a share governance approach to decision making. Identify and minimise interpersonal conflicts that may affect team or individual performance. Implement the Human Resource strategy at unit level to effectively manage sickness absence, leave entitlement, discipline and grievance procedures, seeking advice and support from the Matron.
