Job summary

The Microbiology Department is looking for an experienced Microbiology Biomedical Scientist to join our management team following the retirement of one of our experienced managers. The department provides a 24/7 Clinical Microbiology service to the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS trust one of the largest teaching hospitals in the UK. We provide a full microbiology service and therefore provide an exciting opportunity to expand your experience in all areas of the service.

You will be an experienced Specialist Biomedical Scientist with at least three years post registration experience in a UK Clinical Microbiology Department and hold a Masters degree / IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma in Medical Microbiology or Virology. Molecular training is provided but previous experience would be desirable especially at a supervision level.

You will take on the management of a specialist area of the department, working to ensure we remain up to date with all national guidelines and reviewing opportunities to improve the service where possible. With your depth of knowledge and experience you will be involved in the development of junior scientists helping the department maintain its high standard of training as a IBMS accredited training site.

As a manager in the service there are opportunities to work in Bacteriology / Virology and Molecular services. You would work with the Quality manager and be responsible for maintaining all the documents required by the specialist section under your management. You will provide the expert knowledge in your area and help support the medical team with queries as they arise. You will take the lead for the development of your staff and ensure that they are following the departments training plans and be accountable for the competency of the entire team. Where required you will perform the training as necessary.

You will provide professional leadership and line management for the staff of the section, to include work planning and rosters, training and mentoring, performance management and other HR issues

The Clinical Microbiology service is a comprehensive medical microbiology service handling in excess of 900,000 microbiology and virology samples per year. We are a well established Institute of Biomedical Science training centre and provide opportunities across a variety of professional qualifications for individuals that are able to demonstrate the key skills to progress within their microbiology career.
