  8. Participation in clinical audit and in continuing medical/dental education.
  9. Conducting suitable duties in cases of emergencies and unforeseen circumstances
  10. The post holder will not participate in out of hours consultant cover

Teaching

Medical education within the Trust would not be possible without the involvement of the Consultant medical staff. The Trust will aim to facilitate this through the development of appropriate job plans, a clear framework for the delivery of medical education and the opportunity to enhance clinical and teaching skills through Continuing Professional Development.

Participation in undergraduate and postgraduate medical and dental education would be expected, particularly by providing clinical supervision for the departmental Orthodontic Specialist Registrar (SpR) and teaching to the DCTs and Speciality Registrars in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery. The Department is actively involved in the education of medical students from the University of Nottingham and regular visiting dental students from the Universities of Sheffield and Leeds.

The department operates a rolling programme of cancellation of clinical activity to allow a STUDY DAY for all personnel on a bimonthly basis and Consultants are expected to participate. Study days include journal club, joint radiological and CPC meetings, morbidity and mortality, Clinical Governance, Basic & Advanced Life support updates and other elements of CPD.

We are looking to expand the orthodontic services we provide by potentially training an additional orthodontic therapist in the future. It would be hoped the successful applicant would lead on this aspect of the units expansion.

Research, Governance and Audit

Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust has extremely close links with the University and has academic departments in the majority of its clinical specialties. There is active collaborative research between NHS and academic staff and NHS Consultants.

All normally-expected research facilities are available within the Medical School and other departments of the University of Nottingham. Research facilities are also available in the purpose-built Medical Research Centre on the City Hospital campus. Anyone involved in research is required to adhere to the National Framework for Research Governance.

Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust is committed to the development of Clinical Governance. The approach taken is to develop actions plans at a directorate level. Each member of the medical staff is expected to take an active role in clinical governance activities within their directorate and each directorate has a Consultant nominated as Clinical Governance lead. The activities include, (but are not restricted to) audit, incident reporting, review of complaints, risk management, CPD and Evidence Based Practice. SPAs will be reviewed depending on roles taken up.

Other Duties as Agreed

The appointee may wish to take on other roles alongside their clinical role. Any positions offered by anyone outside the Trust, (eg Training Programme Director, Regional College Advisor, Royal College Representative etc,) must be discussed and agreed by the Head of Service in advance of the position being accepted, so that the impact upon the specialty can be fully considered and any job plan amendments undertaken should the additional role be accepted.
