Job summary
NUH is the Regional Neuroscience Centre for the East Midlands and has very comprehensive Epilepsy, Movement Disorder, Dementia, and neuroinflammation services. This involves a wide range of subspecialty outpatient clinics in which we provide a full range of standard and advanced therapies and treat full spectrum of common, rare and complex neurology patients. This is in addition to wide cover of acute neurology in the east midlands as we provide care to complex acute neurology patients admitted on our neurology wards.
This post is offered initially for one year fixed term and suited to individuals who are considering a career as a neurologist.
The role will provide comprehensive training and experience in the management of neurological disorders so that on completion the doctor will have good skills and expertise to manage patients with simple or complex neurological disorders within either district general or regional neurology services.
Our registrar body consists of 12 registrars who cover different roles in Nottingham university hospitals and Derby royal hospitals. Registrars cover different roles in 6 weeks blocks. During each block registrars cover either clinics or neurology wards in NUH or RDH. The degree of supervision of the appointed candidate will depend on their degree of previous neurology experience. However successful candidate will not be expecting to rotate to Derby so will only be expected to provide cover in QMC.
Main duties of the job
The post is designed to deliver the following roles:
- To attend neurology ward round and work under supervision from neurology consultant on call. This will include assessing neurology patients and overseeing their care while inpatients. The ward team is usually large team of junior doctors and another neurology registrar who will be working closely with the successful candidate.
- To attend and contribute to a range of supervised general neurology clinics as well as subspecialty clinics such as epilepsy, movement disorder, and multiple sclerosis.
- To deliver independent general neurology clinics supported by consultants.
- To cover out of hours neurology oncalls. Those are usually non-resident however over the oncall weekends successful candidates are expected to be present on site for 8 hours on average on each day. Frequency of oncall would be in range of 1 in 7.
About us
The neurology department consists of 15 consultants working in various subspecialties, 12 neurology registrars working between Nottingham university hospitals and Royal Derby hospitals sites. We also have large number of very experienced specialty nurses working across various subspecialties.
The post holder will work mainly on NUH neurology ward and QMC neurology outpatient clinics but will also be part of the wider neurology team at NUH.
