Job summary
The advertised post is for 2 Full-time Locum Consultant Neurologist's at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, and will be for 6 months in the first instance. The posts will be based solely at Queens Medical Centre and will have a focus on acute and inpatient Neurology. The posts would be particularly suitable for a newly qualified consultant looking to get more experience of inpatient Neurology, or a consultant with a particular interest in acute Neurology.
Main duties of the job
QMC Neurology has operated for over 18 months a Hyperacute Neurology unit (HANU) which supports acute medical areas by providing a facility for same day assessment of patients with suspected Neurological disorders, which in turn facilitates early diagnosis and discharge. The HANU has proven both popular and successful, and has shown the merits of having early Neurology input in this cohort of patients. However, the capacity of the HANU is limited and there remain a significant number of patients with Neurological conditions who do not meet the criteria to be accepted to the HANU (they may not be suitable for same day discharge). The successful candidate will work in acute areas, including the medical admissions unit, A and E and general medical wards to review unselected admissions with proven or suspected Neurological diagnoses. The posts will be supported by the on call SpR. This activity will complement the work that is done on the HANU, and the postholder will liaise closely with the HANU consultant to ensure the appropriate and efficient delivery of care. It is anticipated that there will be an increased demand for Neurology review from acute medical specialisms during the Winter period.
In addition to in-reach activity, the post holder will be expected to run a weekly acute clinic to see urgent GP referrals.
The post-holder does not carry a pager and will not be contactable directly by the Switchboard unless this has been specifically agreed.
About us
Clinical neurology forms part of the Nottingham Regional Neuroscience Unit and serves the population of Nottingham. It also provides an outreach neurological service to Kings Mill Hospital in Mansfield. In addition, consultants from NUH also perform clinics at Leicester and Loughborough to support sub specialty services in these areas.
The delivery of Inpatient Care is on a "Consultant of the Week" (COTW) system.
Since December 2020, the Neurology department has run a Hyper-Acute Neurology Unit (HANU). The post-holder will be expected to contribute to the provision of HANU services, according to a rota, and in line with needs of the service.
