Job summary

A new opportunity has arisen as part of our commitment to workforce transformation to employ 14 Senior Maternity Support Worker (Pregnancy Mentor) Apprentices within our community midwifery service, working in partnership with Small Steps Big Changes (SSBC) and Birmingham City University.

This exciting opportunity has been designed for candidates with extensive health and/or social care experience who want to further their career by working alongside midwives and maternity support workers at the frontline of a family's journey through pregnancy, childbirth and into parenthood.

We are seeking professional, compassionate and motivated individuals who are passionate about developing themselves and their clinical skills. We are looking for a team who will be committed to delivering the national public health priorities within maternity services and who can champion women, birthing people, their babies and families by valuing them, challenging them and inspiring change.

This apprenticeship programme includes a funded place on a 2 year foundation degree programme. Paid study leave is included, as is dedicated support through our network of clinical educators and practice development staff.

We particularly welcome applications from people who live or work in the SSBC wards or who identify as Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic, Disabled or LGBTQI+

Main duties of the job

  • To work as an integral part of the maternity team, delivering clinical care for pregnant women, people and families throughout their maternity care journey.
  • You will be based in one of our community midwifery teams supporting families living in the four wards supported by Small Steps, Big Changes (SSBC)
  • As well as making visits to women in their own homes, you will also be providing care and support in children's centres, health centres and clinics, as well as our maternity units at QMC and City Hospital.

Key contributions this role will make in maternity, will be to providing specialist information, both individually and in groups, that aims to support families to make changes to achieve healthier lifestyles.   • The promotion of smoke free pregnancies and prevention of exposure to second hand smoke.
  • Breastfeeding, and supporting families in their informed choice of infant feeding in line with the UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative.
  • Encouraging antenatal social and emotional development, as well as early speech and language development e.g. talk to the bump.
  • Involving and engaging fathers/partners in the maternity journey and preparation for parenthood

Essential

  • oEnglish, Maths and ICT skills to Level 2 (or equivalent) or commitment and capability to complete this by September 2022.
  • oCare Certificate or commitment and capability to complete this before September 2022.
  • oCommitment and capability to study for Level 5 Foundation Degree (Assistant Practitioner Apprenticeship - Maternity Pathway) or equivalent.

Desirable

  • oIn-depth understanding about factors that influence health and ill-health (e.g. anatomy and physiology).
  • oMaintains and develops own skills and knowledge, and that of others, through recognised Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities enabling flexibility in practice and responsiveness to changing service needs.

Experience

Essential

  • oAbility to demonstrate person-centred negotiating and influencing skills.
  • oKnowledge and/or interest in public health and reducing health inequalities e.g. smoking cessation weight management and infant feeding.

Desirable

  • oAssisting in total patient care and assessment.
