Job summary

To provide assistance and support within Major Trauma Therapy Services as directed by the Therapy team. The role is to assist patients in their treatment programmes under the guidance and supervision of registered therapists. An important part of the role also includes documentation of major trauma rehabilitation plans in addition to administrative and housekeeping tasks. The area of work is within Major Trauma which also covers Orthopaedics, Spines and Neurosciences.

Main duties of the job

To assist patients with treatment programmes and rehabilitation under the guidance of the qualified Therapists. To undertake the documentation of major trauma rehabilitation plans, recording of patient contact and utilisation of various computer software programmes. To work flexibly across all teams supported by Major Trauma undertaking clinical and administrative tasks.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To provide assistance and support within Major Trauma Therapy Services as directed by registered therapists. The role is to assist patients in their treatment programmes under the guidance and supervision of therapists. An important part of the role also includes documentation of major trauma rehabilitation plans in addition to administrative and housekeeping tasks. The area of work is within Major Trauma which also covers Orthopaedics, Spines and Neurosciences.

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

PATIENT CONTACT:

  1. To undertake/participate in admin duties related to Major Trauma patients rehabilitation needs
  2. To work under the direction of a therapist to carry out prescribed treatment protocols including individual and group work e.g. supervise functional activities or exercise programmes.
  3. To assist in the rehabilitation of Major Trauma patients.
  4. To contact carers/relatives where appropriate as directed by the therapist.
  5. To instruct patients in the use of equipment, following assessment by a therapist.
  6. To prepare patients for treatment including dressing, un-dressing and toileting when necessary.
  7. To document patient interventions in the therapy notes, according to local guidelines, and report back to the therapist.
  8. To communicate effectively with patients using skills of persuasion, motivation and explanation to encourage the patient to undertake their treatment programme including those who may have barriers to understanding, such as loss of hearing, dementia.
  9. To be aware of risk management issues, identify risk situations and take action to minimise risk.
  10. To ensure that patients receive a high standard of care at all times.

NON PATIENT CONTACT

  1. To act in a professional manner and demonstrate exemplary customer service in all interactions.
  2. To demonstrate effective time management skills.
  3. To perform administrative duties e.g. rehabilitation prescriptions, booking therapy appointments, photocopying etc.
  4. To prepare equipment for patient use and perform daily safety checks e.g. ultrasound/equipment.
  5. To assess safety and cleanliness of equipment before issuing to patients e.g. walking aids/wheelchairs
  6. To monitor levels of stock, ensuring adequate supplies at all times e.g. exercise sheets, patient information leaflets, walking aids and splint stock.
  7. To perform identified housekeeping tasks to ensure the smooth running of treatment areas.
  8. To communicate effectively with all members of the multidisciplinary team.
  9. To be responsible for maintaining own competence to practice through CPD activities, and to maintain a portfolio which reflects personal development.
  10. To participate in staff appraisal scheme as an appraisee and be responsible for complying with an agreed personal development programme to meet set competencies.
  11. To contribute to the organisation of the support worker in-service training.
  12. To support data collection for audit and input stats onto clinical manager.

  • GCSE (A-C) or equivalent in English and Mathematics
  • Previous experience as a Physiotherapy or Health / Rehab Care Assistant.
