Job summary

The Patient/Public Involvement & Engagement Manager, will support the department of Research and Innovation (R&I), the NIHR Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) and NIHR Nottingham Clinical Research Facility (CRF) in developing key patient and public involvement initiatives in line with the #NottinghamIsResearch Strategy. The post holder will develop and coordinate Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) projects, across R&I and our centres of excellence (BRC/CRF). The position will include developing and managing a portfolio of involvement and engagement activities for PPI/E that is effective and embedded across all NUH research and is representative of the wider Nottingham population.

The post holder will support the work of the Communications and Engagement business unit, working across the clinical research teams based in R&I (Nottingham University Hospitals), BRC and CRF, and on wider joint research initiatives with our research partners. The role will focus on providing a support and management service for researchers/clinical research projects. It will also support our programme of research stakeholder events and help to support the work in building relationships with local communities and community champions.

Main duties of the job

The Patient /Public Involvement & Engagement Manager will report to the Head of Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement, R&I, with the following key result areas:

  • Development of the active involvement of patients and the public in research across NUH, supporting the implementation of the policies for PPI/E
  • Development of initiatives in support of Research Delivery Teams, to increase participant recruitment into research trials across NUH.
  • Planning and implementation of effective PPI/E initiatives which support the full lifecycle of clinical research - from initial concept, through grant application and trial set-up, delivery and dissemination of outcomes

The broad ranging research portfolio includes our National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centre awarded in 2017-2022 in partnership with our academic partner University of Nottingham. The R&I Department also support the NIHR Nottingham Clinical Research Facility located across three hospital sites.

Without the involvement and support of patients and the public, there would be no clinical research. This post is part of the innovative programmes we are developing for increasing the ways in which more people can become involved in and help us develop clinical research which meets the needs of the communities that we serve.

PPIE Coordination and Management:

  • Support and facilitate patient and public involvement and engagement in research across the NUH research portfolio, including our centres of excellence (BRC/CRF).
  • Support researchers in understanding the PPEI remit and guidance on completing the relevant sections of grant/ethics applications.
  • Plan, organise and coordinate PPI-related events, including booking venues, liaising with attendees, organising materials and ensuring information is correct and appropriate for participants. Also to support researchers in planning engagement activities where necessary.
  • Act as the first point of contact for researchers seeking to involve members of the public in their research.
  • Respond to enquiries and attend meetings with researchers to discuss their requirements and provide advice on PPIE. This will include liaising with NUH internal and external partner departments and organisations.

Events and Engagement Management:

  • Develop and coordinate the Nottingham Research Hub, an online community platform for research, liaising between patients/public and researchers, and ensuring compliance with all Information Governance requirements
  • Support recruitment and involvement drives at local engagement events, increasing presence in Nottingham for health research through community-based events.
  • Coordinate a workforce of Community Champions involved in supporting health research initiatives and events led by the Communications and Engagement Business Unit.

Governance, Monitoring and evaluating PPI/E activities:

  • Support consistent processes, support and accountability of the PPIE across the 6 BRC Themes and Trust research team.
  • Support the implementation of policies and procedures PPI/E, including developing ways of monitoring PPI/E and its impact on research.
  • Administration and maintenance of PPI/E impact evaluation, outcome measures and performance metrics.
  • Support regular reports and updates on PPI/E activities to BRC and R&I Trust boards and committees.
  • Oversight and administration of the payment processes for PPI/E and participant payments for research.

General Management for PPI/E and Communications teams:

  • Deputise and cover for other members of the team as and when required
  • Collaborate with other members of the team to run events, and to develop / deliver PPI/E and communications initiatives
  • Support the recruitment of Research Volunteers, processing of applications and maintenance of volunteer database in line with the voluntary services department and policies/procedures.
  • Oversee the PPIE and participant payments process in line with the Payment for Patient and Public Involvement SOP.
  • Manage and maintain the Research Patient Hub and online voucher system for payments to PPI/E and research Participants.
  • Organise and manage meetings with key stakeholders and wider NUH teams.
