Job summary

An exciting opportunity has become available for a Biomedical Scientist apprentice. This is a joint venture apprenticeship with Nottingham Trent University and Nottingham University Hospitals Pathology Department. Completion of a BSc by day release and the IBMS registration portfolio will lead to a permanent position of a HCPC registered band 5 Biomedical Scientist in the Haematology and Blood Transfusion Department.

To qualify for the full course A-levels or equivalent are required, to qualify for the top up a minimum of 50% of the course must be completed and current qualifications MUST have been pre-assessed by the IBMS.

Main duties of the job

Completion of both university studies and in house competencies to achieve HCPC accreditation will be the main expectation in the first instance. Qualified Biomedical scientists are responsible for the provision of test results and blood products for patients in both primary and secondary care. You will be proficient in the use of the analytical and IT solutions to generate these results and report back to our users.

The department utilises Sysmex XN, CS and CN series with a GLP track, DI digital morphology, Biorad IH1000, Winpath and Q-pulse as the main analytical and IT platforms.

Once qualified you will be expected to participate in the 24/7 shift pattern, the role is rotational between both Queens Medical Centre and Nottingham City Hospital.

Nottingham University Hospitals are a large teaching trust with specialities including the Trent Cardiac Centre, clinical haematology, regional haemophillia comprehensive care centre, and the trauma centre for the Trent region. With such specialist services on sites our laboratories have routine and specialist sections to match, including red cells, haemostasis and thrombosis, and regular transfusion of both BMT and major haemorrhage patients.

Our laboratory holds IBMS training status and UKAS/MHRA accreditation.
