Highly Specialist SLT ENT Benign Voice

Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join the established SLT ENT/HNC team at Nottingham University Hospitals Trust. The role requires highly specialist knowledge and skills to assess and manage patients with benign voice and swallowing conditions You will be working within a dynamic friendly supportive SLT team and alongside consultant laryngology colleagues, You will have significant experience of delivering a range of of highly specialist SLT interventions and autonomous management of a complex ENT caseload. Competence in laryngeal endoscopy and interpretation of laryngeal images including use of stroboscopy, and FEES competence are desirable. You will have access to regular supervision and clinical support and will be working with an innovative and research-active department. Part-time and flexible working will be considered.

Main duties of the job

  • To assess, develop, evaluate and implement highly specialist Speech and Language Therapy interventions within the specialty of ENT laryngology, within your agreed competence and with access to supervision and support from senior colleagues
  • The role requires a highly specialist level of clinical and professional expertise to provide a safe, well-co-ordinated, pro-active, specialist, efficient and effective ENT/HNC SLT service to patients in acute and out-patient settings.
  • The role includes management of diverse patients with highlycomplex voice, speech and swallowingdisorders, arising from disorders of benign aetiology, and head and neck cancer
  • The post holder will provide highly specialist clinical expertise and leadership within the voice pathway.
  • The role includes working closely with consultant ENT colleagues in multi-professional voice clinics and as part of the wider multi-professional team.

About us

The SLT ENT/HNC Service sits within the Surgery Division of Nottingham University Hospitals Trust and is a stand-alone SLT service. We benefit from strong ENT/HNC and Surgical Division leadership and support at NUH as well as close links with other SLT Services within the hospital and across Nottinghamshire.

Service Delivery

  • To prioritise and manage a large and diverse caseload ensuring practice is in line with the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists Position Papers and Quality Guidelines, and the HCPC professional regulations.
  • To develop, deliver and monitor highly specialist interventions for patients within the defined pathway, encompassing all aspects of complex diagnosis and management for effective communication and swallowing.
  • To independently manage and prioritise own complex caseload in a highly specialist area.
  • To work collaboratively with a variety of different agencies/professionals across primary and secondary care; social services and the voluntary sector
  • To be responsible for planning, provision, monitoring and evaluation of programmes of learning and development to other professionals within specialist clinical area
  • To represent the Speech and Language Therapy service at agreed forums as delegated by line manager and service lead.

Clinical Practice

  • To independently provide a highly specialist SLT assessment, diagnosis, intervention and advice service to patients with swallowing and communication impairments within the ENT benign voice pathway, as well as services to families, support staff and professionals
  • To undertake, interpret, and act on complex information gathered from a range of sources, including video laryngeal examination, endoscopic swallow clinics; Videofluoroscopy x-ray swallow clinics and diagnostic formal and informal assessments in line with RCSLT competency and clinical banding
  • To take shared responsibility with consultant colleagues and other professionals regarding differential diagnosis of swallowing, voice and airway disorders
  • To be highly skilled in managing a wide range of complex clinical voice/vocal fold movement disorders using and interpreting instrumental assessment procedures (endoscopic evaluation of larynx; layrngograph acoustic assessments etc.)

Communication

  • To communicate complex condition-related information from assessments to patients, carers, families and members of the MDT/other professions.
  • To work closely with patients, carers and families, agreeing decision making relevant to patient management.
  • To demonstrate empathy with patients, carers, families and colleagues, ensuring that effective communication is achieved, particularly where barriers to understanding exist.
  • To demonstrate skills in motivating clients and carers to engage in the therapeutic process.
  • To deal with initial complaints sensitively, avoiding escalation where possible.
  • To form productive relationships with others who may be under stress and/or have challenging communication or behavioural difficulties.
