Job summary

We are seeking appoint a highly motivated Consultant Anaesthetist with an interest in paediatric anaesthesia to join the friendly, supportive and dynamic team that forms the Anaesthetic Department at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.

Nottingham University Hospitals Trust was created by the merger of Queen's Medical Centre (QMC) and Nottingham City Hospital. Nottingham Children's Hospital is co-located at QMC. The anaesthetic department is part of the Clinical Support Division (CSD) and is represented at both campuses. The Paediatric Anaesthetic Departments is part of the QMC team and is operationally integrated with Nottingham Children's Hospital, Family Health Division (FH).

The Divisional Director for CSD is Dr Thea de Beer and Acute Pathway Lead (comprising Theatres, Anaesthesia & Critical Care) is Dr Hannah Sycamore. Dr Chris Harber and Dr Adam Carney are Heads of Service for Theatres and Anaesthesia at QMC campus and City campus respectively. Dr Suzanne Wake is Clinical Lead for Paediatric Anaesthesia.

Divisional Director for FH is Dr Emma Fillmore. Dr Sophie Wilne is Clinical Director of the Children's Hospital.

Main duties of the job

Across the two campuses there are a total of 57 operating theatres. All surgical specialties are covered between the two campuses. With regard to specialties - cardiac, thoracic, renal and burns and plastics are located at the City campus which is also where a large amount of cancer surgery is undertaken. The QMC anaesthetic department supports a very significant acute surgical workload, including trauma orthopaedics, major trauma, neurosurgery and spinal surgery. Colorectal, Hepatobiliary, Vascular, ENT, MaxFax and Opthalmology are also based at QMC. There is an obstetric unit at each site. In addition we have an expanding pre-operative unit and acute pain services at each site. The Day Surgery Unit at City campus and the Nottingham NHS Treatment Centre on the QMC campus provide self-contained pathways for day case and short stay patients undergoing an expanding range of general, gynaecological, urological, orthopaedic and plastic surgery procedures.

Nottingham Children's Hospital and all of paediatric surgery is co- located at the QMC campus. Paediatric radiotherapy is delivered at City campus.

About us

The paediatric anaesthetic department supports a significant acute and elective paediatric surgical workload. Nottingham Children's Hospital provides specialist and regional services which include neonatal surgery, paediatric oncology, including radiotherapy, trauma orthopaedics, major trauma, neurosurgery, spinal surgery, cleft lip and palate services, ENT, maxillofacial surgery and ophthalmology. Day case procedures are delivered in a dedicated suite, with 2 theatres. Anaesthesia is also provided for community dental surgery, diagnostic imaging and medical procedures.

This post is to support the existing team of paediatric and adult anaesthetists and to enhance the delivery of low complexity high volume surgical and diagnostic procedures in older children with minimal co-morbidities. The appointments will offer an exciting opportunity to work with an enthusiastic team across a broad range of adult and paediatric specialties.
