Job summary

This post is for substantive appointment of a full time Consultant Paediatric Oncologist with additional training and expertise in paediatric haemtology. Applications are invited from candidates with experience and training in Paediatric Oncology with Haematology. The successful candidate will join the Consultant Team providing the East Midlands Children's and Young Persons Integrated Cancer Service (EMCYPICS) at Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) and University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL) NHS Trusts. The appointee will be expected to play an important role in the work of the East Midlands Children's Integrated Cancer Service.The post is primarily based in Nottingham Children's Hospital at the Queens Medical Centre Campus of the NUH Trust. The appointee will be employed in the Children's Hospital on behalf of East Midlands Children's and Young Persons Integrated Cancer Service (EMCYPICS). This role will have responsibilities across the region.Out of hours and weekend cover will entail all aspects of the management of Children and young adults with cancer. The post holder will provide ward support to junior staff for all in-patients when on hot week (1 in 6) but will be fully supported by colleagues for specific clinical issues.The post is full time and has 10 PA's in the core job plan, with an additional optional 0.5SPA for TYA lead to be discussed. The on call commitment to the Paediatric haemato oncology service is 1:6 nights and weekends with prospective cover.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will share the caseload of newly presenting patients with solid tumours and leukaemia and will also be responsible for the regional haemoglobinopathy patients. The successful applicant will have additional responsibilities for prescribing and review of patients in the maintenance phase of leukaemia treatment. They will not have responsibilities for neuro-oncology patients outside of oncall/inpatient cover. There will be no laboratory haematology responsibilities. This role also includes being lead for Teenage and Young adult patients with attendance at a weekly MDT and service development responsibilities currently focusing on improving transition between paediatrics and adult services.

About us

We provide a comprehensive range of specialist services for children in Nottingham, together with tertiary paediatric and neonatal services to the adjacent areas of Lincolnshire, Derbyshire and North Nottinghamshire (Trent SHA catchment area), surgical services for Stoke on Trent in the Midlands and neurosurgical services for Leicestershire.

The paediatric malignant haematology and oncology service at Nottingham Children's hospital treats all leukaemias, solid tumours, CNS tumours and undertakes the initial work up of children with non-malignant diagnoses initially thought to be malignant. Children with Retinoblastoma and primary bone tumours have biopsy, strategic management and definitive surgery at supra-regional units but all chemotherapy and local support for these patients is managed within Nottingham Children's Hospital. Children requiring allogeneic stem cell or bone marrow transplants are referred to Sheffield Children's Hospital.

The successful applicant will become part of a friendly and collaborative team of 7 consultant haematologists and oncologists. We have strong links with the University of Nottingham, with two team members having academic appointments. There are currently 3 consultants covering the haematology service with one lead each for leukaemia, haemostasis and red cell disorders. Nottingham and the surrounding area is a beautiful place to live with outstanding nearby schools and excellent transport links to other major cities.
