Job Summary
The Clinical Microbiology Department at Nottingham University Hospitals are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and experienced Healthcare Scientist to develop and support the provision of a highly specialised diagnostic clinical microbiology service.
Following a significant investment to promote growth of the microbiology service, and be able to provide a comprehensive 24/7 clinical diagnostic microbiology service, the department is looking towards the development of specialist and niche diagnostic services, particularly utilising molecular diagnostic and sequencing techniques.
The post holder will join the Research & Specialist Molecular team, consisting of a rotational Associate Practitioner, an STP trainee, a senior Clinical Scientist, 2 HSST level Clinical Scientists and a Consultant Clinical Scientist.
Main duties of the job

Work closely with senior scientific and medical staff to develop clinical microbiology services at NUH. Where appropriate, participate in the development and maintenance of guidelines and procedures and provide specialist advice on the use of diagnostic technologies for the microbiological investigation of infection.
Acquire and maintain a high level of competence in the performance of clinical microbiology tests and investigations.
Assist in the validation, implementation and supervision of new techniques, methods and technologies within the laboratory, with particular reference to molecular diagnostics.
Undertake research, development and audit projects as directed by the operational and clinical service leads and present the findings of research and audit to other members of the microbiology team, and to service users or the wider scientific community.
Support and supervise the training of other members of the laboratory service in specialised techniques (e.g. Molecular and sequence-based diagnostics for clinical microbiology).

About us
The Research and Specialist Molecular (RSM) team within the clinical microbiology department consists of a rotational Associate Practitioner, an STP trainee, a senior Clinical Scientist, 2 HSST level Clinical Scientists and a Consultant Clinical Scientist.
The RSM team are closely integrated with other areas of service such as Bacteriology and the Virology, Serology and Molecular (VSM) laboratories, and the Clinical Microbiology/Virology team. The microbiology department has excellent inter-professional links with other services within the Trust such as Infection Prevention & Control, Infectious Diseases and other clinical specialities.
