UNDERGRADUTE MEDICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT (UMED)
The post not only involves teaching opportunities but the chance to build your CV when applying for a training number or for any future post. It offers the chance to undertake a higher degree, via the Masters in Medical Education programme, present at local, regional, national conferences and research innovative ideas in medical education. The Department fully supports all Clinical Teaching Fellows in developing the course and UMED also has its own annual Undergraduate Medical Education Conference, where best and innovative practice can be shared.
You will be based on the QMC campus and will have office space, desk and PC. You will be working alongside other Clinical Teaching Fellows in other specialties and will be able to work together on projects and share good practice.

Main duties of the job
KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Applications are invited for the above post. The overall aim of this post is to help the Ophthalmology Directorate to develop and consolidate the undergraduate teaching programme and course material, and to explore alternative methods of teaching, in order to cope with ever increasing student numbers. The post will commence from February 2022 and is for 12, 18 or 24 months depending on the post-holders preference.
NUH provides clinical teaching for medical students from the University of Nottingham Medical School. The Ophthalmology Directorate traditionally receives 8-10 Clinical Phase 2 (CP2) medical students for an intensive two week attachment dedicated to Ophthalmology. This runs from July May and will continue up until May 2022.
From 28 February 2022, the University of Nottingham Medical School is implementing a new curriculum. Ophthalmology will sit within the new Foundation to Practice Phase 1 (FFP1) course and will run from 28 February 2022 25 October 2022, for an intensive two week attachment dedicated to Ophthalmology for 8 10 students. We will have a period of cross over with the old CP2 course and new course FFP1 Course in 2022.
About us
The post holder will also undergo regular reviews and an annual appraisal. This will be in line with the national education standards set by ASME (Association of the Study of Medical Education), which the UMED aspires all of its Clinical Teachers to adhere to.
There will be opportunities throughout the two years to present at local, regional and national conferences. The NUH UMED runs its own conference on an annual basis and encourages staff to present good practice initiatives as well as supporting staff to attend regional and national conferences, such as ASME and ASPiH.

- To deliver the Undergraduate Ophthalmology Curriculum to the medical students on a two week basis, including covering the mandatory teaching topics in an interactive and innovative manner base,
- To deliver the practical skills session for medical students, including the MACCS, workplace based assessments, case based discussion and tutorials and clinical reasoning case based teaching.
- Where appropriate to provide direct clinical teaching within the clinical environment, such as clinics and eye casualty.
- To provide teaching on the Early Clinical Experience Course (14 x Year 1/2 hospital visits).
- To further develop self-directed learning materials including web based learning resources (Moodle).
- Contribute to the formal examination of these students including OSCE examinations and exam question writing. Take part in one-to-one tutoring of students re-sitting their exams and provide one-two-one teaching support for struggling students.
- Contribute in a strategic sense to the evolution of teaching for all the above groups.
- Support teaching across the clinical course as required. This will be especially required during the period when the Ophthalmology course will not be running.
- To refine and update a series of hand-outs for the Ophthalmology course.
- To support the development an expert patient database to help with outpatient teaching and assessment.
- Working with the Undergraduate Manager and other Clinical Teaching Fellows to develop innovative teaching methods across the clinical course.
- Undertake appropriate projects to support your own learning and improve the experience of the Department.
