Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to appoint a part-time substantive Specialist GP with an interest in breast surgery. We are looking for a dynamic and motivated clinician to join our friendly, high-performing team.

The breast surgery department at Barnsley Hospital is nationally recognised as a leader in delivering 28 day Faster Diagnosis Standard (FDS) treatment targets and delivers a service with the highest quality of care. In 2022, The breast surgery team was recognised as an outstanding achiever by NHS England and a benchmark for NHS breast surgery services.

The service diagnoses and treats around 250 breast cancer patients yearly, with Barnsleys breast screening service is located in the newly developed community diagnostics centre (CDC). The successful candidate will play a key role in providing outpatient capacity, service development and leading on our breast pain pathway.

Main duties of the job

This post will appeal to an appropriately trained clinician who has a proven sub-specialty interest in breast surgery. The appointee will have the enthusiasm to work with colleagues to develop the service in line with national guidance, delivering high quality care to patients.

This role will be working as part of a cohesive and motivated breast surgery team and MDT. The post holder will conduct one-stop clinics with radiology support, follow up clinics and breast pain clinics.

This role would be ideal for a candidate with an interest in continued professional development and an interest in working in a forward thinking team with opportunities to become involved in departmental teaching. As a smaller sized team, you will have opportunities to lead on service development projects with support from your peers and implement changes that improve the quality of care that the service provides.

The working days for this post are flexible based on the needs of the service and the post holder.

This is an additional post following a service review which has resulted in the provision of funding for a new post. The successful candidate will work closely with the multi-disciplinary team to provide comprehensive breast services to patients in this part of South Yorkshire.

The post will appeal to an appropriately trained general practitioner who has a proven sub-specialty interest in breast surgery. The appointee will have the enthusiasm to work with colleagues to develop the service in line with national guidance. The Trust is committed to continued professional development and will support the appointee within available resources.

The successful candidate will support with a range of outpatient clinics as part of the breast surgery team including new patient clinics, follow up clinics and lead on the breast pain clinic pathway for the service. The post holder will be given appropriate time for administrative functions as part of the job role.

This post is a part time role with flexible working days based on the needs of the candidate and the needs of the service.

Breast Services at Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

The breast symptomatic and screening service is particularly well developed at Barnsley Hospital. A well-integrated multidisciplinary team meets weekly to ensure good communication and effective care planning.

There is a dedicated breast screening unit providing pleasant, private surroundings for patients. It is well equipped with three mammography machines and two state of the art ultrasound machines. This Unit is supported by radiologists with a special interest in breast imaging. There are two to three one stop clinics with instant reporting in operation in addition to two symptomatic clinics for follow-up and results. There is a weekly breast screening assessment clinic supported by the breast care nurses. The Barnsley breast screening programme has a screening population of 41,437 women with an excellent uptake rate of 80+%. There is a requirement that the breast surgeon regularly collects and submits surgical data for BASO to the regional QA reference centre.

Each year the screening and symptomatic services together identify over 200 new cases of cancer of the breast in Barnsley. Breast services in Barnsley compare well with regional and national standards and the new expanded unit opened in September 2003 within the new Women & Childrens Department. Breast cancer patients are offered a comprehensive range of services including Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy and breast reconstruction. Oncoplastic MDT occurs every two weeks and microvascular reconstructive surgery is performed in collaboration with our plastic colleagues in Pinderfields.

There is a keen interest in research and participation in clinical research is active with support from dedicated research nurses within the hospital. Barnsley patients are encouraged to take part in local and wider range trials.

The unit is supported by specialist breast care nurses. Family history clinics are held by the specialist breast care nurses and prothesis fitting service is provided by the breast clinic nurses. The nursing staff also after-care services such as wound check and drainage of seromas.

Barnsleys breast unit is a bespoke outpatient area with five individual clinic rooms, two quiet rooms and a prosthetic fitting room. The breast unit is co-located with the breast radiology assessment unit to provide a one stop outpatient service for patients in Barnsley.

The hospital is well equipped with eight operating theatres in the main theatre complex and two operating theatres in the dedicated day surgery unit. Our Wednesday breast surgery lists run in the main theatre complex. The hospital has a well-equipped combined ITU and SDU. Currently admissions for breast surgery are managed through theatre arrivals.
