This is an exciting time to join the Physiotherapy service at Barnsley as we introduce newly created Assistant Practitioner posts to support the Medical / Surgical Inpatient Team.

The post would suit a motivated and enthusiastic individual with the ability to work autonomously as well as part of a team, ideally with prior assistant or healthcare experience wanting to progress their skills.

Good communication and time management are required to work within a busy inpatient environment across a variety of settings. The caseload and duties will require you to work independently to provide therapy interventions and implement programmes of care devised predominantly by the Physiotherapists.

The successful candidate should be able to promote and understand the impact of effective health promotion, empowering healthy lifestyles and where appropriate deliver group ward based sessions

As part of this post you will be expected to be flexible in your working pattern to cover a 7 day service across the Medical / surgical Team as service need requires.

Main duties of the job

To provide therapy interventions and implement programmes of care devised by the specialist Physiotherapists within your scope of practise to be able to modify care plans with the availability of registered staff as needed.

Manage a caseload which may span across different specialities and may include the

delivery of class led exercise and education sessions.

Motivate others to adopt healthy behaviour changes.

To support self-management including patient education

To support the physiotherapists to deliver high standards of coordinated, personalised care whilst working as an integral member of the Physiotherapy Team

To provide therapy support to people at every stage of their treatment plan this may include signposting them to other services.

To contribute to audits and service evaluations, gathering patient feedback assess the effectiveness of care and inform service delivery

To work over a 7 day service, covering weekends on a rota system.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience working in a rehabilitation/clinical setting as a Therapy Assistant or Technical Instructor, or ability to demonstrate relevant experience to an equivalent level.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Foundation degree Health and Social Care, or equivalent level 5 qualification; plus, A levels and GCSEs or equivalent(s), including Functional Skills (level 2)
  • Or as a level 5 apprenticeship, such as the Assistant Practitioner apprenticeship.
  • English and Maths pass grade at GCSE or equivalent examination board eg Functional Skills Level 2 Care Certificate (or studying towards)
  • Current full driving licence

Desirable

  • Completed recognised IT course e.g. ECDL/Elite/MOST

Knowledge and Awareness

Essential

  • Understanding of the importance of Health and Safety in the workplace
  • Understanding of the risk assessment process
  • Knowledge of Clinical Governance and implications for patient care
  • Able to recognise when guidance and support is required and initiate appropriate escalation processes.

Desirable

  • Experience of delivering exercise classes.
