Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 4 Assistant Practioner to work jointly within the Nutrition and Dietetics (N&D) and Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) Oncology team. The role will be based at Barnsley Hospital.

The post holder will work closely with a multi-disciplinary team consisting of Dietitians, Speech and Language Therapists, Nurses and Doctors, to provide holistic care to patients across the cancer pathway. The post will cover mainly GI cancers and lung cancers and some work with patients who have a diagnosis of head & neck, working with speech therapy.

The successful candidate will have previous experience working in a clinical setting, with excellent communication skills and a real desire to support patients as they go through their treatment journey. They will be responsible for planning and prioritising their own day; within the allocated workload and resources and will hold their own caseload and have their own clinics.

Main duties of the job

To provide therapy interventions and implement programmes of care for lung, GI and Head & Neck cancer

To take action relative to a patients health and care needs when needing speech and language therapy and dietetic intervention before, during and after their cancer treatment for nutrition support, gastrostomy tube management and communication.

To work across the cancer pathway to provide rehabilitation therapy focused support for patients about to undergo cancer treatment

To support self-management including patient education and support to manage the consequences of treatment of diet and fluid intake.

To deliver high standards of coordinated, personalised care whilst working as an integral member of the Head and Neck cancer team

To work within the specialist services of Lung, GI (upper and lower GI and Head and Neck Cancer MDTs including Clinical Nurse Specialists, support workers, surgeons, oncologists, Speech and Language Therapists and ward Dietitians promoting effective inter-professional and multi-disciplinary team working within the scope of the role.

To provide support to people at every stage of their cancer journey, this may include signposting them to other services including psychology, cancer care centres, physiotherapy and tissue viability

To contribute to audits and service evaluations, gathering patient feedback assess the effectiveness of care and inform service delivery

Essential

  • Foundation degree Health and
  • Social Care, or equivalent level 5 qualification; plus, A-levels and GCSEs or equivalent(s), including Functional Skills (level 2)
  • Or as a level 5 apprenticeship, such as the Assistant Practitioner apprenticeship.
  • Relevant clinical experience eg. cancer pathways, Speech Therapy or Dietetic services.
  • English and Maths pass grade at GCSE or equivalent examination board eg Functional Skills Level 2 Care Certificate (or studying towards)
  • Current full driving licence

Desirable

  • Completed recognised IT course e.g. ECDL/Elite/MOST
  • Level 4 dysphagia competencies, or evidence towards Dietetic competencies.

Experience

  • Be able to demonstrate substantial experience working within Speech Therapy or Dietetics.

Knowledge and Awareness

Essential

  • Understanding of the importance of Health and Safety in the workplace
