Job summary

We are looking for enthusiastic, efficient and motivated Health Care Assistants to work on our Cardiology & our Cardiac Care Unit.

There are multiple posts available at both full time and part time hours working shift shift rotations.

The postholder will work as part of the multidisciplinary team delivering a range of designated tasks/duties of a clinical and non- clinical nature including personal compassionate care to patients, working within agreed policy and procedures.

The post holder will undertake assessment and recording of basic patient clinical observations/test results as part of the overall assessment of a patient.

The post holder will work under the supervision of the NMC Registrant at all times, who holds delegated accountability for the work designated.

The HCA role includes performing tasks such as recording of basic patient clinical observations, competing Venepuncture, cannulation and performing ECGs as part of the overall assessment of a patient. You also have to complete the care certificate to ensure you are delivering person centered & compassionate care.

Main duties of the job

You will be working under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse/Midwife, knowing what is expected of you, not working outside of your role, following reasonable requests and instructions within your work which may include chaperone of patients, transfer of goods and equipment between departments. Following locally agreed competency based tasks supported by training and education to gain theoretical underpinning knowledge to undertake:

  • Basic clinical observations i.e. heart rate
  • Blood glucose recordings
  • Urinalysis testing
  • Lying and standing blood pressure monitoring
  • Fluid balance recording
  • 25-point skin check
  • Application of a dressing under the direction of, and specified by a registered nurse (exceptions are dressings to category 3 or 4 pressure ulcers, compression dressing, negative pressure vac dressings)
  • Bladder scanning
  • Removal of sutures
  • Venepuncture
  • Cannulation
  • Self-retaining catheter (SRC) removal
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring
  • Performing dressing changes on PICC lines (applies only in areas with established PICC services where there is sufficient opportunity to maintain this skill)
